Region : USA

Model : TL-R600VPN

Hardware Version : V1

Firmware Version : 20140801

ISP : Comcast

Hello. I have had a site-to-site IPsec VPN (AES256/SHA1) setup between 2 R600VPNs for about 6 months now, and it has not had any issues at all. I am using it for remote file backup. 1 location is on Comcast with a 100mbps down, 20mbps up connection; the 2nd is also on Comcast, with a 16mbps down, 3 mbps up connection. Recently, the 2nd site was upgraded to 50mbps down, 10mbps up, and I had figured that the bandwidth going from the 1st to 2nd site should now be ~20mbps; however, it is not. I've tested using an FTP file copy from the 1st to 2nd site, and I'm still only getting ~15-16mbps.

Is this really the maximum throughput these units can handle? If so, would a higher-end model sustain a higher bandwidth (the ER6020, for example?)

Before you upgrade the 2nd site, what's the speed?
Compared with it, is there any improvement after the line upgrade?
By the way, your routers are using latest firmware, right?

After the 2nd site was upgraded, the speed did not change. Both of the routers are V2 hardware, and both have the latest firmware listed here: http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TL-R600VPN&version=V2

Speed tests done from clients behind the routers at both sites report the correct speeds (~115mbps down, ~23mbps up at the 1st site, ~54mbps down ~12mbps up at the 2nd site).

So i was able to have some free time today, and brought the 2 units to my home to do some testing. I connected the routers' WAN ports both to the same switch, with the WAN ports configured with a static address of 172.16.16.1/16 (Router A) and 172.16.16.2/16 (Router B). Router A had a 192.168.0.0/24 subnet as its LAN, and router B had 192.168.1.0/24 for its LAN. I did a test using iperf between 2 Windows 7 computers behind the routers. Throughput from 1 router to another was ~800mbit.

I then configured a test IPsec VPN between both of the units. I used iperf to test the transfer speed - it was again, only ~18mbit.

I have come to the conclusion that these models are not sufficient for our needs - we are transferring many large WAV audio files across the VPN on a daily basis, and require as much bandwidth as possible. Since our ISP speed upgrade, we now have more bandwidth available than the R600VPNs can handle.

I will be looking into the ER6020 as a replacement. Thank you for information.

Throughput is per specification.....

The only reason I caught this is that I am doing some research on devices and this is one of the specifications we are identifying.

The max throughput for this device with an IPsec VPN Throughput (3DES) tunnel is 20Mbps. So, sorry to say, the unit is performing as specified.

Hope this helps.

This is a better choice for throughput as it has a better minimum specification: IPsec VPN Throughput (3DES) 80Mbps
