I think I've found the answer to this, but would like to check it against your collective wisdom.

The M5 has two channels and when using Ethernet backhaul, both channels are used for wifi clients. The M9 has three channels, but when using Ethernet bakchaul, only two of its channels are used for wifi clients. The third one is apparently reserved for wireless backhaul and when using ethernet it remains unnuse (TP-Link confirmed this in an email). Since both the M5 and M9 only use two channels with Ethernet backhaul, this suggests that the M9 presents no speed advantage over the M5. Is my reasoning correct? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

When we use Ethernet backhaul, it doesn't need to communicate via wireless link.
In that case, there is no much differnece between Deco M9 and M5.
However, M9 has a big advantage when we use wireless connection.
yeah, your understanding is absolutely correct.
