Model: Archer VR2800
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 0.4 and 0.3 both have issue

every time i open the kasa app on my phone the vr2800 goes into meltdown with DNS failure

all clients disconnect, the 2.4ghz channel becomes completely unresponsive and the only way to do anything is connect a client with a static address

even when my phone is connected to 5ghz - it is still always the 2.4ghz that crashes

the router will not restart if soft-rebooted... it must be power-cycled on the switch

why does the kasa app do this discovery (many multicast mdns packets to 255.255.255.255) and what can i do to keep the vr2800 from crashing every time?

@Ricky666

Hello, apologies for the super late reply.

Can you please confirm what is the firmware version of your VR2800 and how about the version of your Kasa app? Theoretically, the Kasa app will send a broadcast packet to find the Kasa devices in the network.

BTW, please verify your network layout that how are the devices connected and what are they? Is there any switch in your network? Or any special settings on the VR2800?

Thanks.

@Myapps late reply haha

vr2800 is now on 050 091 july 2020 release (the one with broken ipv6 56 delegation)

kasa app is now 2.23.0.936

vr2800 is factory except for ssid and password. no additional switches or anything

@Ricky666

Good day.

Sorry for the delay.

Did you still have the problem?

If yes, please refer to the following suggestions:

  1. Manually change the DNS address on the Archer VR2800;
  2. Did the Kasa APP only affect the 4ghz, or both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, even the Ethernet connection?
  3. If possible, please also try to modify the wireless channels and channel width of the 2.4ghz and 5ghz, such as https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2292/

By the way, what are the Kasa smart devices you have?

Thank you very much.

@Myapps i threw the vr2800 in the trash where it belongs and bought an asus instead which is better

i already was using external manual dns. the problem is multicast groups, not unicast dns lookups

only 2.4 was affected

the wifi channel has no effect on how the dns daemon in the router buffers multicasting
