Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.4.4

Hi!

I have deco m5 mesh system in my house.

Yes, I know about the QOS application priority setup.

I got a 100mbps connection, with around 20 simultaneous devices doing various internet activities all at once at peak.

I just want to know if there is a possibility to limit all or any device to a certain speed.

For example a chromecast device, streaming netflix should just be limited to 10mbps, not consuming 60-80mbps at one full blow buffering a movie.

Reason for this is so that we wont experience a sudden lag when playing online games.

I already tried setting up the high priority devices and "GAMING" qos setup. but still some devices eat up bulk of the internet.

I've done QoS on my network from my ASUS RT-AC3200 Router: prioritising and bandwidth limiting, as opposed from my Deco M5. Ostensibly I only bought the Deco M5 to serve as a mesh WiFi and nothing else. My ASUS router, which is a beast, does everything else such as QoS, DHCP, Nat'ing/Port Forwarding, Firewall, Client Management etc. In other words the ASUS is doing all the hard work from a network traffic point-of-view.

In essense my setup is: Virgin SuperHub ('modem mode') -> ASUS Router (router wifi turned off) -> Deco M5 (Access Point mode).

Sorry for not being helpful.

Virgin Media 200Mb+ SuperHub (Modem Mode) -> ASUS Router (WiFi Off) -> three Deco M5 units (in Access Point operating mode).

Hi, thanks for your reply. I am trying this setup now, but I used TP link 940n router as the base router while only using deco as mesh. Problem is i have to input all the users IP and limit it one by one, which is kinda hard. Also this setup would make deco's other features kinda useless.

@marlu I've set up static/fixed IP addresses for all my clients (about 38) around the house from my ASUS Router. It's a long process I agree but its a one-time effort. After that I only have to add one or two once in a while when a new client is added to my network. My network looks like this:

ASUS Router LAN Port 1 -> connected to an 8-port gigabit switch -> SONY Android TV; SONY Bluray player; Virgin cable; Netgear NAS; LightwaveRF smart home hub**.

ASUS Router LAN Port 2 -> connected to SONOS Amp; then connected via SONOS mesh to other SONOS speakers.

ASUS Router LAN Port 3 -> connectected to Deco M5; providing WiFi to: NEST Thermostat; Printer, Google Home speakers; iPhones; Android Phone; Android Tablet; iPad; Foscam CCTV camera; Laptops/Chromebooks; NEST CO2 Smoke alarms etc etc etc.

ASUS Router LAN Port 4 -> Unused.

**LightwaveRF hub then connects to smart lightswitches, sockets, lamps, radiator valves.

Virgin Media 200Mb+ SuperHub (Modem Mode) -> ASUS Router (WiFi Off) -> three Deco M5 units (in Access Point operating mode).

@marlu

Hi all

Thank you for keeping up with this thread.

I hope others with the same queries might see this and will be able to help them also.

using an external router and setting up limited bandwith per IPs is tough, all the more when other new devices get in the network from time to time. @ Chiswick_Singh  setup might be the best solution, but we'll waste DECO's great features like anti virus, etc..

I'm currently experimenting with Deco's built in QOS feature.

This is what i'm currently on:

DECO on router mode.

QOS > set my total bandwith to half of my modem

100mbps DL / 40mbps Upload  ------- QOS Total bandwitdh 50mbps / 20mbps

on theory this will enable DECO to "LIMIT" all the devices to not eat all 100mbps bandwidth (for example when buffering videos)

while maintaining a good speed to all devices.

i will update the results after trying this.

update to this. unfortunately this theory does not work this method limits all the available bandwidth to 50mbps. i verified this by doing a speedtest from my PC and Phone all at once, what i got was my PC at 48mbps and phone at 2mbps.
