Model: Archer A6
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.7 Build 20201010 rel.49458

Hello,

I have an Archer A6 router bought around 2 months back. It is connected to an FTTH modem with 100Mbps connection.

When connected to 5GHz wifi, I get connection speeds of 90-95 Mbps. However under the same circumstances (just switching the wifi), when I connect to 2.4GHz, I get a maximum speed of 40-45 Mbps. Upload is 90-95 Mbps in both cases. This behaviour is consistent.

I have a laptop with AC wifi adapter. The associated/lnk speed shows 520 Mbps when connected to 5Ghz and 144.4 Mbps on 2.4GHz.

The testing is done with the laptop a few meters away from the router and with no other device connected.

For 2.4GHz, Wi-fi mode is set to 802.11n only.

Channel and channel width are set to Auto. Tried several options with no difference in behaviour.

Security/encryption is set to WPA2-PSK AES.

Negotiation speed shows 100Mbps full duplex.

WMM and Short GI are enabled.
MU Mimo is disabled.

Tried disabling NAT Boost. No difference.

Shouldn't I be getting simiar speeds on a 100Mbps connection on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless? Or is my understanding/expectation wrong?

I have checked several threads which mention similar issues; however found no working solution except downgrading to firmware version 1.3. Anyone has had the same problem and resolved it ?

@Rustin.Peace

I got the router replaced by TP-link. Took a month for the replacement to arrive. Got the newer V3 device. The issue was resolved with the new device.

Have you tried to set Channel width to 40Mhz (for 2.4GHz band) and turn on MU-MIMO ?

@Ivaylo

I have tried both with no improvement in the download speed.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

What's your AC wi-fi adapter model ? Normally the associated/lnk speed for 2.4GHz band should be nearly 300mbps for A6.

Have you tried to check for high congestion on the 2.4GHz band in your area - there's a mobile app (WiFi Analyzer) which can help select the best channel.

@Ivaylo

I will check and update the exact wifi adapter model.

For 2.4GHz, the associated/lnk speed shows 144 Mbps for A6. For two other routers that I have tested with, it shows 280Mbps.

I had already tested the wifi channel congestion with Wifi Analyzer. The A6 uses channel 10. While there are other routers nearby using channels 1 and 6, none uses 10 nor 11.

I have manually tested with chanels 1, 6, 10 and 11 and Auto mode. But the result remains the same.

I am getting slightly higher speed (around 50 to 52 Mbps) after changing the 'Beacon Interval' to 1000. Not really sure if this change got the speed up from 45 to 50 though.

One thing I have noticed is that when I ping the router, at times I get very high (up to 3000ms) ping times (with no other network activity). Not consistent though.

MTU is currently set to 1460. Have tested with values from 1400 to 1500.

Thanks.

@BS11

Try these wireless settings:

Keep these to default:

If it still doesn't connect at about 280mbps then as channel you may put 11. Test again.

@Ivaylo

Just did some tests with Channel set to Auto as well as 11. Other parameters as you mentioned.

2.4GHz speed is around 45Mbps; 5GHz speed is 93Mbps.

Will do some more tests tomorrow.

Edit

Did several tests. Link speed is still 144Mbps. Same download speed (~45Mbps) for 2.4GHz.

Disabled 'AP Isolation' after tests.

Thx.

Nothing unusual here. It's unusual that on 2.4 GHz band your association speed is only 144mbps.

@Ivaylo

Are you saying this is expected behavior?

Or is it a problem with the router and should it be taken to service center ?

I've meant nothing unusual with your AC adapter. I can't say definitively that's a router issue. Maybe someone from TP-Link will advise on that. Try to use different device (laptop, tablet, phone) observe the association speed again.
