Model: Archer C6
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.0.5 Build 20201117 rel.41066(5553)

Model: Archer C6 (US)

Hardware: v3.20

Firmware: 1.0.5 Build 20201117 rel.41066(5553)

As mentioned in the title, my router's WAN Port Negotiation Speed drops from 1000Mbps Full Duplex to 100Mbps Full Duplex on Reboot. My ISP is providing me 150Mbps (PPPoE) and to get that speed I need the Negotation Speed to be 1000Mbps Full Duplex. Switching between "Auto Negotiation" and "1000Mbps Full Duplex" in System Parameters only works sometimes. Rest of the time I'm forced to run Quick Setup again or do a factory reset to get it back to 1000Mbps Full Duplex. The fix is so random.

Fyi I'm from India and I bought this router recently from Amazon. Didn't think I'd get a US model. I've spent hours trying to find a permanent fix. Now I wish I hadn't bought this router. If somebody could help me, I really appreciate it.

You can see what's the HW version and FW region either from the sticker on the bottom of the device or from the Web GUI: Advanced=>System Tools=>Firmware Upgrade Make sure you are with the latest for your Region and HW version. Is it an option testing with a different cable?

@Ivaylo Says, "Model:Archer C6(US) Ver:3.20" on the sticker and the firmware is 1.0.5 Build 20201117 rel.41066(5553), which is up to date.

You mean test the WAN port with a different cable?

Correct. Sometimes poorly crimped ethernet cable can cause this as well.

I saw you have factory reset the deivce while trying to resolve the issue.

Try hard reset the device (Method 1) if you used Web GUI previously and test to see if any difference.

@Ivaylo Idk how I'm supposed to test this but here's what I did. I picked a spare Cat 5e cable and plugged it from my router's WAN port to my PC. I then checked the adapter status for speed and it's 1.0 Gbps. I also plugged the ISP provided Ethernet cable (also Cat 5e) directly into my PC and its speed is 100.0 Mbps, WHICH IS WEIRD cause I remember it being 1.0 Gbps as well, just this morning and I was getting 140-160 Mbps.

Edit: I will give hard reset a try.

@shbm22

Well, that may or may not proove my thesis about using a different ethernet cable, but what you've done is a good cable negotiation speed test actually.

Proceed as you've planned.

@Ivaylo Alright.. hard reset brought it back to 1000Mbps Full Duplex but I believe if I reboot now it'll drop down to 100 again.

Well, you have to test that and observe. If the issue persists, the next thing would be replacing the cable, if that's possible.

@Ivaylo Yup. It dropped to 100 after reboot. I'll ask my ISP to check the cable tomorrow. Are you sure it's not the firmware or something? I haven't seen much about my model (v3.20) on the internet.

When talking about FW, you can't be sure of anything - it's like a black box for the user - it could be well or poorly written.

What points to the cable issue is your test earlier: "I also plugged the ISP provided Ethernet cable (also Cat 5e) directly into my PC and its speed is 100.0 Mbps" (assuming your PC port is 1 Gbps).

There are also devices with faulty ports. But you can exclude the reasons one at a time - and that seems to be most obvious.

@Ivaylo I see and yes, my PC port is 1 Gbps. Mobo is Strix X370-F Gaming.
