Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.1 Build 20210113 Rel.35074

Hello all,

I currently use TL-R605 router at my home, and I find it quite efficient. I use it in standalone mode because I appreciate the user interface and the functionalities it offers, but I'm a little bit disappointed by the impossibility to use either Openvpn or IKeV2 vpn protocols for my 'client to router' vpn connexion. And it's a little bit frustrating to see that it seems possible using Omada, but I don't want to use Omada (because I don't easily find some options I use in standalone mode, and I want to access the router parameters page in a simple manner with my browser).

The question : do you think IKev2 (or Openvpn) could be made available in standalone mode through a next firmware ?

I'd like to move from IKev1 to IKev2 for 2 reasons : first because it is considered more secure in a number of sites, and also it includes NAT traversal, which would be useful in my case. I don't really understand the rationale to propose these protocols in Omada mode and not in standalone mode, neither not proposing them in the standalone mode, in such a recent router. Please TP-Link, implement, if it is possible, this kind of possibility in a next firmware update !

Thanks for reading,

Benjamin

Edit April 15th :

@Fae do you think these improvement could be included in a next firmware update ?

@all : if you would also be interested by Openvpn & IKev2 in standalone mode, don't hesitate to reply or send a Kudos, to promote this evolution - thanks in advance ;-)

@Fae Hi Fae, I noticed that the updated firmware for v1 hardware was released recently, and could see that indeed Openvpn was now available. However, it seems that Ikev2 is still missing, do you confirm ? was it what you meant in the subsequent firmware release : after the one including Openvpn ?

Have you already upgraded to the new 1.2.0 firmware?

I checked my ER605 v1, the Ikev2 has been supported with the 1.2.0 firmware upgrade.

As far as I know, it's not supported in the next firmware update. Not sure if it will be supported in the future.

To gather feedback from others, I'd like to transfer this thread to the block of "Requests & Suggestions" so that it could be seen.

If there is a large demand, I'll forward this as a feature request to the product team for evaluation.

@Fae Thanks Fae for this very quick answer.

I sincerely encourage at least the IKev2 implementation in standalone mode, because :

- lots of security related articles consider that IKev1 (only available option in standalone) is not recommended, IKev2 is recommended instead,

- it is natively compatible with NAT-T,

- it is much more consistent for a so recent router, and it would be consistent with what is possible with Omada (I hope it is not a commercial strategy not to propose it in standalone - it would be a pity).

Thanks in advance if you can support this evolution,

Best regards

Benjamin

Hello, I think IKEv2 is not an option, it is absolutely necessary to have it in a VPN Router

@TP-Thomas sure, fully agreed - I can't understand that it is not yet implemented in the standalone mode, while it is available in controller mode. I'm quite disappointed that this up-to-date technology is not used for such a recent hardware, and surprised that few users request this mandatory update.

This has been forwarded to the developer team for further evaluation.

FYI, OpenVPN will be supported in the Standalone mode of ER605/ER7206 in the subsequent firmware releases, I'm not sure if IKEv2 will be supported in standalone mode or not, please check for the new firmware release notes for final confirmation. Thank you!

@Fae Please add also IKEv2 to standalone mode. Azure Virtual network gateway with Basic SKU knows only about IKEv2 smiley Thanks

@Fae   Hi Fae, I just noticed that the datasheet of the v2 of this router was mentioning Ikev2 availability without saying it is available only in the controller mode, in opposition to v1 and v1.60 datasheet information.

So maybe my problem is solved with the v2 version of the router, but it would be quite frustrating not to have access to Ikev2 due to the version I own...

Can you confirm that Ikev2 is indeed available in standalone mode on the v2 ? and if yes, any chance to have the same possibility on the v1 ?

Thanks in advance, Ben
