I have set up the Archer AX3000 router as per the app. Does it automatically put my virgin Hub 3 into modem mode?
I have not set the Virgin hub 3 into modem mode myself, should i have done that first?

You have to put your VM Hub3 in modem mode manually. Configuring the AX3000 won't do that for you automatically.
After finishing configuration cable connection should be: port 1 of the VM Hub3 to AX3000 WAN port (blue one).
The AX3000 internet connection type should be set as Dynamic IP.
