DNS issue with AX3000/AX53 and Disney Plus / Virgin Money / Amazon / Playstation Network
Good evening!
I've recently had a new ISP (Giganet UK using CityFibre if relevant) and decided to switch out the ISP router (Eero 6E pro) with the TP-Link AX53 / AX3000.
I used the settings the ISP gave me to get set up but didn't quite work. I could ping out but showed as disconnected and couldn't browse the net. I got it down to a DNS issue. Presumably the TP-Link didn't like my ISP's DNS. I switched it to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) and immediately I had the internet, seemed fine.
However, I keep having issues connecting with certain apps from my phone, the apps mentioned in the title just freeze up and don't go anywhere. If I switch to mobile data it's fine. I'm getting 900/900 in speed and most things are fine, websites themselves seem ok, largely seems to be 'apps' .
Anyone have any insight as to what the problem could be? I don't want to have to give up, return the router and switch back to the Eero if I don't have to. I already had TP-Link extenders around the house so don't want to lose the mesh I have.

Could you use these apps when the Eero 6E pro was connected, just to rule out it may be an issue with the ISP?

@klipse hi thanks for replying! Yeah I've switched back to that for now until I think of something and have no issues at all.
I can confirm the eero is automatically using the same DNS as my ISP provided me, and yet the tp link will not use them. That's what's making me figure it's the DNS that's the problem. I can't imagine tp link has an issue with these apps as I'm sure it would be a wider issue if that was the case.
Could it be something at the ISPs end not liking me using public DNS on their network?

Not 100% sure, Giganet is quiet a straightforward setup on a 3rd party router.
What settings did Giganet give you to put in the AX53? Can you list them?

Yeah I thought it would be straight forward too, I've set up routers with more complicated settings before. The following is from their 'how to set up your own router' page.
Connection details
Connection Type: 1Gb/s Ethernet WAN connection to the ONT (CAT5e/6 cable required)
Authentication Type: PPPoE
PPPoE Encryption: PAP [sometimes not needed]
PPPoE service name: [leave blank]
PPPoE username: view in customer portal
PPPoE password: view in customer portal
MTU 1500 Bytes: [sometimes not needed] (although you may need 1492 Bytes.)
Assigned IP addresses (Your public IPv4, DNS, default gateway): Your public IPv4 can be viewed in customer portal. PPPoE should automatically assign your public IPv4, DNS, default gateway IPs. If you need to enter our DNS servers manually, they are:
Primary DNS: 37.48.224.26
Secondary DNS: 185.102.149.13
These DNS servers are only accessible from within the Giganet network.
Giganet CityFibre connection installed prior to 1/11/22 VLAN ID: 911. All other services VLAN is untagged / not applicable.
My MTU only goes to 1492 so has been set to this, and my installation was Friday so I have not used the vlan tag, although did try it regardless to rule it out. Can't find PPPoE encryption setting anywhere.

Seems as if you know what you are doing. I'm not going to be much more help unfortunately, someone else on here may have an idea.
Did you restart the ONT and possible try asking Giganet customer services although they probs won't help you as you are using a 3rd party router. (their phone support is supposed to be very good)

Yeah I have tried restarting everything. I've emailed them today to ask if there's anything their end that might be stopping it, but I do get they don't have to help me so might be stuck.

Just for the sake of experiment can you try with the Cloudflare's DNSs:
If the router behaves the same I would contact the ISP to discuss the issue.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried that one and a few other public dns.
I get the same issue with all of them, can get online but issues with certain apps, which I don't have with the eero.
I can only assume that it's either the routers problem (thinking unlikely) or the isp don't like me using a public dns. I've emailed them to see what they say.

I have recently moved to giganet too and have experienced the same issue.
I believe the issue is related to the PPPoE Encryption protocol. By default my router (AX3000/AX50) is attempting to authenticate via CHAP (giganet expects PAP).
But like you have mentioned, I can't find the PPPoE encryption setting anywhere.
Have you had any luck solving this?

Hiya!
It's reassuring to know I'm not going mad nor received a dud.
But unfortunately not, I gave up and sent the router back in the end.
Credit where due, tp link did try to support, but in the end wanted to remote in to look, which of course they wouldn't have been able to do...
It does sound like the authentication then, would explain why I could get online using a non-giganet DNS if we can't get authenticated using theirs.
It's a massive shame as I would have preferred to use the tp link.
If you find a solution please let me know as I'd be happy to repurchase it.
