What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity, which is a wireless internet access system. This wireless transmission is akin to signals used in telephones, television, and radio.

Wi-Fi is an indispensable tool for connecting phones, laptops, tablets, and other smart devices like smartwatches.

How Wi-Fi Works

For a Wi-Fi connection, a Router (transceiver) is essential:

  • The Router retrieves information from the internet through a wired connection and converts it into wireless signals, transmitting it outward.

  • Wireless signal transmitters (adapters) on mobile devices receive these signals and decode them into necessary data.

This process can also work in reverse: the Router receives wireless signals from the Adapter, decodes them, and sends them over the internet.

Current Wi-Fi Standards

  • 802.11: Introduced in 1997, it supported a maximum speed of 2 Mbps at the 2.4GHz band.

  • 802.11b: Debuted in July 1999, offering speeds up to 11Mbps. It operated at the 2.4GHz band, prone to interference from other electronic devices.

  • 802.11a: Running at a higher frequency of 5GHz, it processed at 54 Mbps. However, it struggled to penetrate walls and had a higher cost.

  • 802.11g: Slightly superior to 'b,' but also operating at 2.4GHz, reaching speeds up to 54 Mbps.

  • 802.11n: Launched in 2009, the most popular standard, supporting speeds up to 300Mbps, operating on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. It's gradually replacing 802.11g due to its larger coverage and faster speeds.

  • 802.11ac: Introduced in early 2013, operating at 5 GHz, offering speeds up to 1730 Mbps. However, due to its high cost, devices implementing this standard are not widespread, limiting their optimization.

  • 802.11ad: Introduced in 2014, supporting bandwidths up to 70 Gbps at the 60GHz band. Its downside is signal penetration difficulty, causing devices to lose connectivity if the Router goes out of sight.

  • 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6): The latest update for wireless networks, based on IEEE 802.11ax, delivering faster speeds, larger capacity, and improved energy efficiency compared to previous wireless connections. The term Wi-Fi 6 officially applied from 2019.

  • Wifi Hotspot: Beyond the mentioned standards, every mobile device can transmit a Wi-Fi signal to other devices, acting as a Router.

Wi-Fi Standards in Vietnam

All Wi-Fi standards are in use in Vietnam. However, the two most prevalent standards are 802.11g and 802.11n, with 802.11n being the most widely used, operating at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

While some new devices in Vietnam utilize 802.11ac, their numbers remain limited due to infrastructure constraints in the country.

This basic overview of current Wi-Fi standards aims to provide a clearer understanding of Wi-Fi, its advantages, and limitations for better decision-making when using it.
