We just purchased a wireless router and cannot get it to work with our computer. We have Windows 8 - I'm assuming that is the problem, but I obviously don't know for sure. Can anyone tell me if there is an update, or anything special I need to do to make this router compatible with Windows 8?

As far as I am aware of, there is no known issue regarding Windows 8 running with a TL-WR841N Router.

I believe your problem is more about setting up a proper WAN configuration but you can eventually try updating your TL-WR841N with the latest firmware available
here: http://www.tp-link.com/resources/software/TL-WR841N_V8_130506.zip

Now if you still have an issue, you show mention if your issue is about a WAN connection issue, a WFI connection issue etc. and also tell us more about what is your ISP connection (PPPoE /Dynamic IP/Static IP)
