Virtual WDS - control virtual interfaces independently

Hello,
I am trying to use Virtual WDS on my TP-Link router that is running OpenWRT.
I have 2 virtual wireless interfaces, which are the children of the single radio on the router:
1) Access point
2) Client
When I configure the Client to connect to my wireless network, it brings down both interfaces (the behavior of the configuration page is to restart the entire network stack).
My problem is two-fold:
A) I temporarily lose connection to the Access Point until the Client is connected - I would like the Access Point to always be up
B) If I specify an incorrect network for the Client to connect to, the Access Point goes down indefinitely (I need to physically connect to the router to disable the Client device which re-enables the Access Point)
My question:
Is there a way to have the virtual Access Point always be up when configuring the virtual Client? Or is it impossible at the hardware/firmware level to independently control the virtual interfaces without bringing the parent device down and up?
Thank you,
Sevag
