I realise you issue is resolved, but i want to back up what clive said.

 

Port forwarding RDP is, genuinely, a SUPER BAD idea.  You are opening that machine up to the entire world, without the router firewall being able to do anything at all.  Any passing IP-Port scanners, even the most rudimentary of them, will detect this port and your machine will be under constant probing.

I understand your advice perfectly.

Initially, I tried to raise the VPN, but I was faced with blocking the encrypted IPSec channel by country restrictions and did not find other VPN options on this router, like PPTP-VPN.
