After much talking I decided to get high speed internet service. My ISP brought home what I thought it was a modem, but ended up being a router gateway or whatever name is used for that.

I managed to connect my router WDR4300 in wireless bridge with the Cisco DPC3825 they brought and it works perfectly.

The both share the same IP distribution, the Cisco ip is 192.168.1.1, while the WDR4300 is the 192.168.1.2.

Now comes the problem:
I have activated the USB FTP Service on the WDR4300, which in LAN it work perfect. If I go to the browser and put: ftp://192.168.1.2 I can access the ftp folder.
I have forwarded the port 21 on the Cisco setting for the IP 192.168.1.2, but even then, i cant get the FTP service to work outside my home network.

Any ideas?

You should check settings on the Cisco router. WAN IP address on Cisco router page is public or private?

Hi Mavis,

As the Cisco is the internet gateway it gives himself a private ip (192.168.1.1 - for the WLAN/LAN network) and my isp also assigns an ip (186.xxx.xxx.xxx - the public ip).

As for the TP-Link, it only has a private ip within the same network (192.168.1.2)

You have to put Cisco DPC3825 in bridge mode to act just as modem.

I've met the problem before. It's because the 4300 couldn't get a default gateway when working on the WDS mode.
As a result, even if the PC outside can have access to the FTP Server, 4300 doesn't know how to routing when TCP link building.
One method to help is static routing.
You can log in the web management page of 4300 and navigate to Advanced Routing -> Static Routing List and add a new static routing.

Hi!

Just like you said, its a problem withing the TPLink routers. If the router doesnt have a WAN cable plugged in, it seems like the router just ignores the ftp service for external network.

After much trying (i tried as someone said above to put the CISCO in bridge mode) nothing worked.

Its a pitty, as the WDR4300 is a great router overall.
