Not connecting to WA860RE 300Mbps Universal

My wifi extender only works with my phone and other equipment only if ithey are already connected to the wifi router first. When I come home I have to turn it off so that my phone connects to the wifi router as it doesnt connect to the extender directly. It gives me access point error. This is very annoying. Any suggestion?
