HI All

Hope you can help me with this. I have three rooms that is very far away from each other. So WIFI does not work. They are Study , Lounge and bedroom. What I have done is pulled in LAN cable throughout all the rooms. The issue I have is with the TL-WR941ND. I ran the setup and it works with the internet over the LAN cable. Where the issue is if you try and use UPNP (like a PlayStation or media server it cannot find it)

So what I did next is I moved the router into the study. Enable WDS or a bridge mode and connected it to the main router. It works and now im able to connect to UPNP devise. I found these settings under the Wireless section.
Unplugged device moved it into another room and internet works but UPNP not working again. Im assuming it enabled the bridge over the wireless.

The question is how do I enable bridge mode but over the lan config and not the WDS.

Hope you can help.

STUDY Setup
Main Router with access to interne. TD-W8980
IP: 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255

LOUNGE Setup
Linksys E900 setup in bridge mode using a network cable.
IP: 192.168.1.2
Subnet 255.255.255
Gateway : 192.168.1.1

If you have wired connection between routers you have to set up WR941N as AP - www.tplink.com/lk/faq-417.html

The TD-W8980 uses an Atheros chip for 2.4GHz wireless and a Lantiq chip for 5GHz wireless.

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TD-W8980_v1

The E900 uses Broadcom chips for wireless.

https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Linksys_E900

WDS is a quasi-standard which often doesn't function well or at all when chipsets by different vendors are used, this is due to both hardware or software differences or both.

Even with identical hardware and software WDS often doesn't function well or at all.

It is only possible to use WDS with the Atheros 2.4GHz wireless on the TD-W8980, the Lantiq 5GHz wireless may not have a WDS implementation available from Lantiq or a WDS implementation if it exists may be buggy so TP-LINK haven't given users an option in the webgui.

A lot of vendors only support WEP or WPA authentication with WDS, change security settings for the TD-W8980's 2.4GHz wireless from auto to WPA or WPA2 with AES encryption. Try WPA2 first and if WDS can't connect then try WPA.

Likely steps on the TD-W8980 but I have not done this myself:
Enable WDS for the 2.4GHz wireless
SSID(to be bridged): is the SSID of the 2.4GHz wireless you have entered above
BSSID(to be bridged): needs the BSSID (wireless MAC address) of the E900's 2.4GHz wireless entered into it, you can likely find this listed somewhere is the E900's settings for 2.4GHz wireless
Key Type: set to WPA2-PSK if WDS fails try WPA-PSK
Encryption: should always be set to AES, using TKIP will limit WDS clients to 54Mbps which you really don't want.

The E900 should use:
The same SSID (wireless network name) as the TD-W8980
Change the E900's 2.4GHz wireless AP WDS mode to wireless bridge (AKA client mode)
You will need to enter the BSSID (wireless MAC address) of the TD-W8980 in the E900's WDS settings screen

These steps may or may not work, documentation for the E900's WDS isn't available.

Using Ethernet over Power kit with an in-built wireless AP is a better option if you don't mind the added expense.

Thanks for the reply.
I configured the device as an access point as per your article.

Step 1 - Did a factory reset.
Step 2 – Configured the WAN to be on a 192.168.2.XX Ip range (static)
Step 3 – Configured the LAN to be on 192.168.1.3
Step 4 – Configured the WAN to back on auto

Deviation from the article
DHCP Disabled
As per step 4 from http://www.tplink.com/lk/faq-417.html If I disable the DHCP none of the devices gets an IP. Unable to connect through the router

DHCP Enabled on range 192.168.1.XX
If I enable DHCP I am able to connect with no problem but I am not able to connect to the UPNP

None of the devices have a duplicate IP address.
I have drawn the diagram to show the current setup and I hope this helps.
But I have also checked the firmware and it is on 3.16.9 Build 150311 Rel.62186n Hardware version 5.

HI n1cholas

Thanks for the reply. I have posted to jimasek what my setup looks like (picture) as i dont think its to do with Chipsets. If i take the router and put it next to the main router and coonect Via bridge or WDS it works fine and UPNP works 100%. As soon as i try over then LAN cable it works with the internet but not UPNP

You have to disable DHCP server on the second and third router. Connection without port WAN.

HI

So if I disable the DHCP server then nothing works. None of the devise connect to either the lounge or the bedroom devices SSID. They will only connect to the study device SSID as it has DHCP.

HI

If i may ask Why would the DHCP be the issue? If DHCP is enabled it gives me an IP and i am able to connect to the internet. It is just the UPNP that i cannot access. Also the other router (lounge) that has DHCP enabled works with internet and UPNP. It just this Bedroom one that does not work with UPNP but the internet works like a dream
