What pattern does this unit give out, I have one running from a power bar, is that a bad idea and it's on it's back.

Of course it should be in a wall outlet facing upwards but how critical is that?

This range extender is using onmi-directional antenna. Its wifi coverage is like the first picture in this link: http://www.tp-link.com/us/faq-468.html
Theoretically, it will cover larger range horizontally if you put it upward. For the exact effect in your house, you's better test by yourself to get accurate info.
