Can I use power line adaptor with airport express?

I have connected one poweline adaptor to my router which is an AirPort Extreme and I have connected the other one to my airport express in the kitchen where the signal is always very bad due to the thick wall between both. The problem I have though is that the WiFi is significantly worse with the poweline adaptor and the connection drops constantly. What am I doing wrong? Is it because it’s not designed to work like this ie connected with an airport express?
