Unable to log in to router

Hi,
I purchased a TDW9970 modem router today for my father. Initially all was fine - correct lights for ethernet connection were on, etc - but couldn't connect to his internet account. I switched router off and re-booted computer and now cannot log in to router (192.168.1.1). All I get is a message telling me to upgrade software, and no ethernet LEDs are on despite two connected cables.
Should I just take router back to shop? Not keen to upgrade software.
