I figured out the problem.  I had reformatted my drive to ntfs from exfat and chose an allocation unit size of 1024kb to squeeze out a little more performance because it will only host large media files.  Before, I reformatted the drive worked on my nivida shield but after the reformat, it did not work on it either.  I reformatted and chose the default size and all is well.

Bottom line, keep the defaults when reformatting.

ntfs and fat32 may be better choice？ummm...
