The Ins and Outs of USB Sharing

Do you know everything your router can do? Perhaps you think its functions are limited to providing Wi-Fi and related wireless functions. However, it also can serve as a powerful transfer station for sharing. How is that possible? Some routers are equipped with USB ports, which can be utilized for sharing and storing information.

Generally, these USB ports provide us with three ways of file sharing: Samba, media server, and FTP server. Want to know how to make full use of the USB ports on your router? Then read on.

1. Samba

This is a feature of local storage sharing which allows you to share a USB device (USB drive or Mobile Hard Disk Drive) that’s connected to the router, with other users on the network. The samba server works like an NAS (Network-Attached Storage) system which is best for sharing between network neighbors. It relies on the Server Message Block/Common Internet File System (SMB/CIFS) protocols, enabling transfer between Linux and Windows systems, which is not otherwise possible. 2. Media Server

The Media Server feature allows you to share music, videos, and photos from a USB connected device to game consoles or media players in the same network. This can be very useful when you want to share your photos with others on your network or access your videos and music on other devices (like an XBOX or Playstation). 3. FTP Server

The FTP server feature allows for the easy access and sharing of files located on a USB hard drive, wherever you have access to the internet. It is based on the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which enables fast and convenient file transfer (especially when it comes to big files) between computers. And you can access the FTP server wherever and whenever you want.
