Archer MR600 with DSL modem - how to reach IP of modem

Hi,
With this set up: DSL modem <--> PC
when I connect a cross-over cable to the modem, I can connect to its web interface on 192.168.1.254.
When I set up like this:
DSL modem <--> ethernet WAN of MR600 <--> LAN <--> PC
I can no longer access the modem web interface. I was wondering whether I needed to perhaps add a secondary IP address to the WAN interface in the same 192.168.1.0/24 subnet but couldnt get that to work.
Any advice on what I am doing wrong?
