Hi Guys,

I did a search but I'm not sure what keywords to use so sorry if this has been answered before.

I have a client that has a WR2543ND (House) and WDR4300 (Office/Internet) router that are located in two separate buildings about 40ft apart. He has each one hooked up to external antennas connected on the outside of the buildings. Back in December I got WDS working between the two routers and the PC in the house was able to use the Internet in the Office as well as share resources between the office and house computers. Two days ago I was down there working on his network and I was having problems setting up network shares. I discovered I wasn't able to ping from the Office PC to the House PC or vice versa and what's even stranger, I couldn't ping the House PC from the House Router (WR2543ND). I checked WDS status and on the House Router is says "Run" but on the Office Router it says "Int" but the WDS is definitely up because I am able to ping from the Office Router to the House Router, plus I am able to use TeamViewer to connect to the House computer from the Office computer. There are no firewalls enabled on Windows. Lastly the DHCP server is only running on the Office Router.

What I'm wondering is, is the House router sending packets over the WDS to the Office router looking for the House PC (and anything in the subnet)? Also why is one WDS say Run and the other says Init? Lastly I noticed after rebooting the House Router that the clock reset to 1970 so I'm thinking the battery has died.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm just waiting to hear back from the client on the Hardware and Firmware versions of the two routers.

Thanks.

There is definitely something wrong with the WDS connection of at least the Office router, as 'Init' means that the WDS connection is down. So, WDS might be partly activated and that is why you can have some traffic on the connection. As you cannot ping the House router from the House PC, the problem is probably on the House router, which you did not reset yet(?).
The clock always resets to 1970 after a reset. If you look in the log, you will see that shortly afterwards the time is updated through the time server, if you use it and if an internet connection exists. Routers do not have batteries to remember settings or time; all is kept in memory, also over reboots, but not after reset.

I would suggest that you set up all connections again after a reset of both routers, which you might and should have done already for the Office router after reset.
Before you set it up again, see if there is new firmware available and update both routers if necessary. If there is new firmware installed already, you might want to revert to an older firmware.

Success, Hugo

Ok I finally made it back out to the clients today and figured out the issue and it was me. I configured both routers to connect to each other. So configured only the 2543 to connect to the 4300 and the WDS is coming up RUN on the 2543 and disabled on the 4300. I assume this is how it's suppose to be since the 4300 is the Access Point (DHCP, WAN connection)?

I have run into another issue though, the LAN traffic only flows in one direction. I've attached a picture of the network topology.

The 2543 is connected to the 4300 using WDS and the Home PC can ping the entire network and browse the Office PC's through Windows Explorer but the Office PC's and the 4300 AND 2543 can't ping the Home PC. All the computers are Windows 7 and on the same Workgroup. Homegroup isn't enabled because I need to setup security restrictions so that the Office computers can access the Home PC shares but not vice versa. I also turned off Windows Firewall on the Home PC just to make sure it wasn't the cause.

Now I'm thinking it's a routing issue as I see the 4300 has the following entry under Advanced Routing:

Destination Network: 192.168.0.0 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 0.0.0.0 Interface: LAN & WAN

If I'm understanding this correctly this is a Default Route but it doesn't seem to be sending packets out the WDS to the Home PC. Does TP-LINK WDS treat the WDS connection as a switch connection and track MAC addresses on the other side of the link? I'm just trying to think why none of the network devices or computers can see the Home PC. Also the Home PC can get on the Internet so that is at least working.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this is appreciated.

EDIT: Oh and both routers are at their latest Firmware versions

I may suggest there might be something set on the computer blocks the Home PC from pinging by other clients, since the firewall has been turned off, maybe you can check the settings for the anti-virus software. As far as I am concerned, the router will do prevent any of the computers from pinging by others. if in the same subnet, they should be able to ping each other. In order to test whether that is because of the router or the computer, perhaps you can connect the Home PC with another computer together into another network, and try to ping the Home PC and see what happens.

Hi Andrew,

I don't suspect the antivirus since the client has the same antivirus on all his computers. With that said I'll probe deeper and see if there are any unique configuration settings or software that could be causing the problem. I'll also bring my laptop into the house and connect it to a different router and see if they can talk.

Thanks!
