Every time the power goes out in my house and returns on, the Deco mesh units give out a random 192.168.68.xxx address to client on the network. It then stops even physically connected devices from getting an IP address..

 

At what point did someone at TP-link think that when the mesh devices were in AP mode, in the absence of a DHCP server, to just give devices a random address... This is not a thing in enterprise land, so why would it be for residential? I cant even give the APs a static IP address. The new updated app doesnt even tell you what hardware version and firmware is on each node.


Whats the point in having it in AP mode then???

 

In my case, the Deco gives everything its own IP before my main router has time to boot up and start allocating DCHP requests.

 

Please remove this silly feature. I spend a good 30 mins everytime having to reboot all switches, routers and devices when the power goes out. This issue has onyl started when I purchased and installed the Deco mesh network.

 

Does anyone else have this problem. I can see threads from back in 2018 https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/104512

and clearly TP-Link has not listened to their customers.

This problem does exist. Still, I am thinking with actions you take to recover from it you make the problem worse for you. 

These are my observations, and feel free to verify them.

 

When main router goes down, Main Deco becomes default gateway and DHCP server, with its current IP address. It keeps assigning IP addresses from the IP range main router has. More to that, because Main Deco knows most of devices already, when that same device comes back it gets same IP address it had before.

Only when you restart Main Deco while main router is down, it forgets about network settings and starts with default 192.168.68.* IP range.

Hint #1:  Do not restart Main Deco when main router is down.

 

When Main Deco assumes default gateway and DHCP server role, it assigns IP addresses with very short DHCP Lease time. In some cases, as short as 1 minute. When main router comes back online, it should take less than 5 minutes for every device that got IP address from Deco to request IP address renewal, now from main router. The network, if properly configured and without issues, should recover very rapidly.

Hint #2: Do not restart anything: "all switches, routers and devices." If in less than 5 minutes they haven't got correct IP addresses, you should investigate why is that. Something may not be right with your network setup.

 

You can also easily check what DHCP lease time Main Deco gives. Emulate main router outage by unplugging Main Deco from it, wait till it assumes role of default gateway and DHCP server, have device connected to Deco mesh request IP address and see what DHCP lease time it got.

 

There is no fix for that in firmware for E4, and who knows if there will ever be, but Deco M5 will let you turn Deco DHCP service off. You only need Main Deco with that capability. Which means, if you buy single Deco M5 and make it Main Deco for your Deco mesh, you can turn off Deco DHCP service feature.
