Hi , ive just had a speed upgrade with virgin to 1gig so have the new virgin hub modem installed. When doing a speed test directly to the virgin hub in router mode im recieving speeds of 1200meg. But when linking my deco to the hub and putting it in modem only mode im only getting around 600meg max when doing a speed test from my phone. If anyone could help that would be great

Thanks.

Deco M4 is WiFi5 device. Maximum theoretical speed of WiFi5 is 866Mbps. Getting 70% of that, 600Mbps, in real life - an excellent result.

Sorry for saying this, but you are hitting the limitations of technology supported by your Deco hardware. To get faster speeds, you will need to replace your M4s with Deco hardware that supports newer WiFi protocols, such as WiFi6 and WiFi6E.

Of course, your smartphone also must support them to deliver better speed test results.

  @Chriscox86 the Deco model you have comes with gig Ethernet ports, so the maximum you would get even if you switched to a wired connection would be approximately 920 Mbps.

Good point. If buying Deco hardware that supports WiFi6 or WiFi6E, but has gigabit ports, the maximum speed of Internet connection will be around 920Mbps, which is the speed of the Ethernet link between Main Deco and Virgin hub.

That is less than theoretical speed of WiFi6 and WiFi6E protocols.

In summary, these are your options:

Keep M4s: the speed you are getting, 600Mbps, is the best M4 can deliver. Nothing will change that.

Replace M4s: if you replace M4s with Deco X20s or X50/55s which support WiFi6, you should see speeds of up to 920Mbps.

Check prices of Deco X20, X50 and X55 two-unit sets and decide if investing in new hardware makes sense for you.

  @Alexandre. Would i be able to keep my virgin modem downstairs in router mode still so i am still getting top speeds then have a ethernet cable running from the virgin hub to upstairs and use deco upstairs for expanding the network speed. So basically i can connect to my virgin hub when downstairs so the speeds are better but use deco upstairs so its still a good signal when connecting wirelessly.

Thanks for your help

Chris

  @Se1lad

Thanks. Would i have to do a full clean install and factory reset the decos to do this? Im not sure if i should have done that when having the new virgin modem installed, it worked when putting the new virgin hub in but the speeds seem to be up and down now

  @Se1lad so with access mode my devices will just connect automatically when nearby and connect to virgin hub downstairs when the signal is stronger right? I'll probably only use 1 deco doing it that way with access point upstairs.

Thanks

  @Se1lad

Hi ive set it up and the speeds are better doing it that way with the deco as an access point upstairs and the virgin hub downstairs as a router. The problem is my devices are only staying connected to 1 and not auto connecting when the signal is better to the other network. Is there a setting you can change so it will auto connect to the best strongest network. Thanks
