Model: Archer AX73
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.0.8 Build 20230616 rel.65817(4555)

I've just had full fibre installed so bought a new Archer AX73 to replace my ISP's router (Vodafone wifi hub) however the wifi speeds are very poor in comparison.

Using the same devices (iPad, Android tablet and Amazon Fire TV) in the same room as the router, and running an internet speed test, the range from the AX73 is 30-100Mbs whereas the Vodafone router was achieving 300-400Mbs. Connecting the AX73 via ethernet to a PC gives speeds of 900+Mbs so there's no problem with the fibre connection to the router.

To test further, I've reconnected the Vodafone router to the fibre and setup the AX73 as an wifi access point connected via ethernet to the vodafone router. So I now have two wifi networks running through the same router/fibre connection.

And there's no improvement, the vodafone router's wifi is around 5 times faster than the AX73. I'd hoped it would be the other way around!!!

So any advice on why the AX73 is performing so badly?

Thanks,

Grum

Quick follow up: I've now reconfigured the AX73 as a router and re-connected it to fibre (so vodafone router is longer used) and everything is working perfectly! I'm now getting a solid 330Mbps on the Android tablet and 600Mbps on the iPhone SE (wifi 6). The significant factor appears to be changing the channel width to 20/40/80/160MHz and the channel to 64 (DFS). Thanks again!

  @Grum

Try these wireless settings on your AX73:

OFDMA enabled

Smart Connect disabled

For 5GHz band:

Bandwidth - 160MHz

5GHz channel channel - 36

Enable MU-MIMO.

Make sure that QoS is disabled.

Connect to the 5GHz SSID and make the test again.

@terziyski thanks for your help. I enabled OFDMA+MU-MIMO and changed the channel to 36 as suggested (the other settings didn't need changing). there was a noticeable improvement but still not as fast as the vodafone router. After using a wifi analyzer app on my android tablet, I noticed that two of my neighbours were using ch36 so I've changed to ch64 and it's a lot better - now on par with the vodafone router.

So I think I'll stick with it - maybe my expectations were too high or the vodafone router is better than I thought!
