Model: TL-WA1201
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.0.1

I have two TL-WA1201 devices as part of my network.

They are configured as plain access points, i.e. all the regular network management (including DHCP) is performed by other systems in the network.

Both have fixed IP addresses provided by the DHCP server *). These addresses lie in the same /24 network as the addresses of all WiFi clients, as from the DHCP server's point of view, they are connected to the same VLAN there.

When I attempt to perform "severe" administration tasks (configuration backup, firmware upgrade), I always get a message box "This operation is not allowed for remote management". I assume the firmware accidentally believes I were connecting from a WiFi device, yet I'm actually connecting from my regular workstation through ethernet. (The workstation doesn't have direct WiFi access anyway.)

*) The same behaviour if I establish a fixed IP address inside the access points. However, as there is no way to provide a DNS setup in that case, I rather picked the option to fix the IP addresses inside the DHCP setup, and have the APs run as DHCP clients.

I noticed there's a more recent firmware available, but as I cannot (easily) perform a firmware upgrade, I would only attempt the upgrade if someone can tell me this problem is no longer present in the current firmware version.

I would connect with a cable directly to the AP and update its FW to v1.0.2, then check if it works as expected.

This is in case you're using VLANs in your network setup and your AP is in plain AP mode.

If you're not using VLANs in your network both wired or wireless connection to the AP should work for FW update.

Well, the device is wall-mounted. Direct cabling could be replaced by manipulating the network switch for a direct connection. Nevertheless, with the current IP configuration, it seems that the AP mistakes my Ethernet connection as a wireless one. I don't see why a 1:1 cable would change anything on that.

Thus I'd have to factory-reset the switch for a firmware upgrade. Before doing that, I'd really like to know whether the bug is gone afterwards.

I finally managed to upgrade both APs.

The strange thing: when I use my laptop (which connects to both, the Ethernet as well as the wireless network), I can actually do all the admin tasks – presumably using the wireless access. Only accessing it through Ethernet (from my desktop machine) produces that "This operation is not allowed for remote management" refuses.

Seems to me the firmware developers might have gotten something mixed up here.
