Archer AX55: Forward DNS requests to the configured DNS server

Archer AX55: Forward DNS requests to the configured DNS server
Archer AX55: Forward DNS requests to the configured DNS server

Model: Archer AX55
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.3

I have a local DNS server which is configured as DNS server in the router. When the local DNS server has issues, I change the DNS server in the router temporarily to some public DNS server, expecting all devices to use this DNS server instead.

For devices using DHCP this works well, but for devices using static IP addresses, this stopped working when I replaced my previous router with an Archer AX55. On the devices with static IP addresses, I have configured the DNS Server to be the router's IP address. With all my previous routers of various brands the requests have then been forwarded to the DNS server configured in the router and then it worked. For my new Archer AX55 however, I do not get any DNS responses when I configure the router's IP address as DNS server, which means that I must configure the DNS server on ALL my devices instead of just in the router. This is not very nice, and it also means that when I need to use another DNS server temporarily, I need to update both the router configuration as well as the DNS configuration of ALL devices with static IP addresses, so it's not just a one time thing either.

Please add support to forward DNS requests (made to the router's IP address) to the DNS server configured in the router so that it's sufficient to configure and update the DNS server IP address in one place.

Hi,

It already supports this feature.

Please change the WAN IP address to the IP address of your DNS server.

Thank you for your response.

So I should already be able to configure my device's static IP address like this (where 192.168.1.1 is the router's IP address)

and my router like this

and then the DNS requests from the device should go to the DNS server configured in the router (192.168.1.222)?

At least it doesn't work for me:

>ping google.se
Ping request could not find host google.se. Please check the name and try again.

Hi,

Please change the DNS address on the computer to 192.168.1.222 as well.

Thanks for your reply. That's the workaround that I want to avoid - and the reason why I created this feature request. Please read my original post again for more details.

It is like the Archer AX55 might not be handling DNS forwarding the same way your previous routers did. Have you tried enabling the “DNS Relay” feature in the router settings. That might help route DNS requests from static  living in emirates IP devices to your configured DNS server.

It is like the AX55 isn’t forwarding DNS requests properly from devices with static IPs. A possible workaround could be setting the DNS server on the router to a public DNS  Tiro al Palo (like Google or Cloudflare) temporarily, then manually changing the DNS for static devices. Hopefully, TP-Link addresses this in a future firmware update.

Thanks for your suggestion. No, I haven't and I cannot find any such setting in this router either.

It seems the Archer AX55 might be handling DNS forwarding differently compared to your previous routers. Have you considered enabling the "DNS Relay" feature in the router settings? This could help route DNS requests from static IP devices, such as those used for Deep Cleaning Services Sharjah , to your configured DNS server.
