Model: Archer AX3000

Firmware Version:

I have strange problems with internet access that mainly affect only a few devices.

I have an AX3000 and use an old Netgear R7000 as an access point as well as a Netgear AC2200 WiFi Range Extender hanging off the R7000. Internet is coming in via a ZTE modem before/into the AX3000.

Connection wise I have the guest network enabled from the AX3000, however the R7000 cannot mirror this exactly so I have to have it also broadcast it's own guest network with the same SSID. The spectrum's don't overlap much geographically so it tends to work well and the extender can only really touch the R7000's network area anyway.

I have also been trying to use the routers parental controls and have 3 rule sets each with varying permissions. None of them restrict by time, only content.

I also use other filtering services like Qustodio and NextDNS. They can do similar things, but in my case the overlap is desired, and I manage it accordingly.

I have it all setup like this for a mix of security reasons and catering for the myriad of devices hanging off it all.

Initially everything was working well, however as I've added more devices, rules, QoS rules and other things, the stability of the internet flowing through the AXE3000 in particular has really begun to suffer.

Specifically what I mean is devices will randomly stop reaching certain content types, certain browsers (mainly Firefox) will stop working, or other content will cease to flow. Sometimes rebooting the router will fix it, sometimes allowing the device to reach the internet via another method (e.g. laptop going to a hotspot) then back onto the AXE3000 wifi will then mean it keeps working for a time.

I've ruled out all the other components of my setup and am fairly confident it is the AXE3000 causing the problems.

The main difficulty is, I see very little or no blocks. devices don't even show as online even when they are, turning off family rules makes no difference half the time (although sometimes it does), and playing with the rules, like turning them all off makes no difference.

None of the other filtering products I've previously, or currently use have problems like this. It's almost as if the AXE3000 can't peer through multiple NAT's....but only sometimes. Other times it works fine, so I don't get it.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

 Hi @_________,

Regarding your question about RE7000 not being able to mirror the guest network, this is because the network being extended is usually the main network, not the guest network.

The Router's system time will be referred when you use the time-related features on the Router, such as Wireless Schedule and Parental Controls.
There are two methods to configure system time:
    1. Using the Web management interface, please go to Advanced > System Tools > Time Settings.
    2. Using the Tether App, please open Tether App and go to "Tools > System Time" or "Tools > System > System Time".
Once you are in, you may choose to "get time from Internet automatically" or "manually specify the time".
Additionally, here are some tips for you if your router fails to get correct time from Internet:
    1. Check if DayLight Saving Time settings are correct.
    2. Make sure your PC is able to get time from the Internet correctly when connected to the Router network, you may have to contact your ISP if the PC doesn't work as well.
    3. Go to time settings page of the Router > manually enter custom NTP servers in the NTP Server field, such as time.windows.com or time.apple.com

There are a few different cases related with unstable connection, including WAN connection unstable and wireless client devices unstable.

For WAN connection unstable (Router Internet LED turns red/orange occasionally):

    1) Connect a PC directly into your modem to verify if your ISP Internet is stable.

    2) Make sure the Ethernet cable between your modem and the Router is connected properly, replaced old cables with new ones.

    3) Change the DNS Server of the Router, login the web management interface of the Router, go to Advanced > Network > Internet > Advanced Settings, change the two DNS Servers into 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8.

    4) Go to Advanced > System > Firmware Update to upgrade the firmware of the Router.

For wireless client devices unstable:

    1) Make sure the Router is properly placed, it should be put in open area instead of inside a cabinet or shelf.

    2) Login the web management interface of the Router, go to Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings, change the wireless channel into another one.

    3) For 2.4GHz wireless client devices, adjust 2.4GHz channel width into 20MHz, for 5G wireless client devices, adjust 5GHz channel width into 80MHz or 40MHz to avoid interference.

If the issue persists, please contact TP-Link support with the result of the above troubleshooting steps.

Thanks for the tips. It could be the time as I was blocking that inadvertently. Have now allowed both the R7000 and the extender to get to NTP sources so will see how it goes. Cheers
