TL-WN851ND causes PC to freeze when I try to install drivers on Windows 10.

Although I managed to get my networking adapter working on Win10, I made the mistake of trying to update the drivers as normal. Now if I try to turn on my PC with the adapter plugged into the PCI slot, the PC freezes or gets a blue screen of death (BSOD) and has to be hard reset. I have tried turning on the PC without the adapter plugged in but then when I plug it in and try to install the drivers using compatibility mode it freezes again. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
