SSH access to Archer VR900v

I have recently purchased an Archer VR900v, and it's working really well. I have found it has both SSH and Telnet ports open to the local network and is running the respective services.
I have several questions:
1) I am concerned about security: Can I turn off these services? And how do I ensure that the username/password for these are changed from their default values?
2) As a Unix expert, I would find it more convenient to monitor my network via SSH than via the web interface. How can I log into the router using this service?
