Sorry if these has been asked before.

I have an Omada network without a dedicated Omada gateway.

The setup is BELL modem to an Omada gigabit layer 3 switch w/ Oc300 controller  then CAT8 running to 3 different buildings into additional layer 3 switches.

The setup has worked great so far, but im running out of IP's on the main subnet.

Im not an expert in IT, and wont pretend to be. 

I know the easiest way to add more subnets would be to add a gateway, however in my situation i run a dorm that offers internet and TV service through BELL.

I was told that the current Omada gateways do not support multicasting and would create an issue for my TV service. Im not sure if that has changed.

 

I did try to search a bit on the forms and couldn't exactly find what i was looking for.
I know the BELL modems do not allow for extra subnets to be added at the modem, or at least that what BELL told me.

So is there a way to add more subnets without a gateway or am i limited on what i can do till multicasting can be supported with Omada?

Hi  @Terran158 

 

SDN L3 switches can work as the DHCP server in the network and they support multi-subnets.

But in order to achieve this, the gateway router is required to be able to translate (NAT) and deliver packets from LAN, but whose source IP addresses are in different subnets from LAN IP segment.

That is to say, the BELL modem router may not support assigning IP addresses from different network segments, but it must support forwarding IP packets from different network segments to function as expected. Please confirm this point with BELL. This scenario is similar to the configuration link below:

BTW, what's the model number of the L3 switches you are using?

Your L3 Switches can create, host and gateway for many vlans (subnets), that isnt a problem, but this will only work if you bell modem supports Static Routes so it can forward IP packets its not directly the gateway for to the switch

I am not certain the Multicast traverses vlan boundaries at all, so the TV service might be affected.

I have one  SG6428XHP and the rest of the switches are  SG3210XHP-M2 and  SG3428X-M2 .

 

I will call BELL and find out if the modem can support forwarding.

 

I know if i didnt have the TV service it would be super easy to add a gateway. But removing the TV service isnt something i can do at this moment.

I guess one way of getting around the multicasting would be to separate the TV service users and run a dedicated Cat8 back to the main switch bypassing my L3 switch and then setup the L3 switch with additional subnets or would that not work?
