TP-Link ER605 VPN Client (NordVPN)
TP-Link ER605 VPN Client (NordVPN)
Hi all,
i'm quite new to the TP Link Hardware but i have the ER650 Router and i want to get it connected to an external VPN Provider (NordVPN or others) with OpenVPN.
Researching the Forum gave me a couple threads but i'm not 100% sure if i got it right.
Is it possible to connect the Router to an external VPN Provider with OpenVPN (as a Client)?
The menu VPN->OpenVPN->VPN Client does not allow me to enter any credentials so the connection won't work anyway.
If it works is there any tutorial of how to do
Thanks in advance,
Arantis

No problem I had gotten my router about 2 months ago to replace my Frontier modem and it was running old firmware and obviously it had no place for username and password so I gave up thinking maybe TP-Link was being restrictive but that didn't make sense. Saw just yesterday that someone had mentioned new firmware that gave the username and password entry so I thought I'd mess with it again. I am pretty happy with TP-Link products so far. As far as the Omada cloud controller, I am new to that and curious if that is something I would want or need. Not sure of it's purpose.
One thing I noticed when enabling and disabling a tunnel is that the button to enable disable seems for me anyway to only work at disabling a tunnel. Sometimes if I want another I have to go in like I am going to edit and click the bottom box that says enable then click ok.

@PiratePoopies
Thanks !
I have very bad bandwidth with NordVPN on my ER605, do you have the same problem?
About 10mbps on a server in my country (vs 300 with NordVPN software).

What you want to do is go to Nordvpn site and get a few recommended servers and download the TCP ovpn files. Open those files in notepad and 4th line down where it says "remote" this is the Remote Server address with the port at the end. So for this screen shot I am using us9308 which I put in the client name. Username and Password I am using the Service Credentials for your NordVPN account. Service Port: 443 (I think all the TCP ovpn files will have 443) Remote Server: 185.203.219.126 is for us9308 Local Network: Use what yours is setup as. Load the ovpn file click enable and then Ok

@PiratePoopies check this out: I'm using the ER605 v2.0 (2.0.1 Build 20220223 Rel.68551) as the main gateway for my SDN (Omada SDN Controller running on my RPi4, two EAP225(US) v3.0, and everything connected on a TL-SG2218 v1.0 1.1.4 Build 20220707 Rel.55528). A very basic, but complete, Omada SDN solution.
I dont see any way to setup my ER605 in this envirionment as a VPN Gateway to route all mny LAN traffic out as you did.
Or something is missing in the current Omada SDN Controller I'm running (5.8.4 as a docker image), or... I have no idea. This is causing me headaches, honestly.
Thanks for any suggestion you may have.
Regards

Thanks for the information on setting up Nord VPN on the ER605 router as a VPN Client. I have an ER605(UN) ver 2.6 firmware 2.1.2 Build 20230210. I accomplished the setup with a Nord server in Miami FL, #9379, it is enabled and the ping shows a connection. I also added the Nord credentials as a VPN user and it was accepted. When I check the OpenVPN Tunnel tab, nothing is displayed. Also when using a computer through the VPN router the connection is connected to the normal ISP and not the Nord VPN server. I am a newbie at this and assume I am missing something obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
