Model: EAP225-Outdoor
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 5.0.7 build 20220120 rel 37786

Good morning,

i'm a reseller. I've bought 2 EAP-225 Outdoor to test it and configure in Mesh. when i try to configure them via android App, it's not possible to pair each other and start a mesh because it seems to ask me for a hardware controller to "rule" the 2 eap-225outdoor.

my questions are:

1)do i need a controller?

2)can i create a mesh without it?

if the 1st answer is Yes, so why do i read here:

https://www.tp-link.com/en/business-networking/omada-sdn-access-point/eap225-outdoor/#overview

" Integrated into Omada SDN "

when i try to create a mesh via smartphone App, it asks me a "Main AP" and i can see EAP265HD in "compatibility List". I cannot continue further, because it scan and it tell me that there is no Main EAP with cable connection, but my EAP-225 is LAN connected in the same network with my smartphone. if i go in EAP265HD tp link website i don't read any big difference with EAP225 OUTDOOR:   so "why" eap265HD should be better than EAP225 ? does EAP265HD include a Hardware Controller inside it?

3)or maybe  cannot I create a Mesh because of Old Firmware on my EAP-225? how can i upgrade firmware? seems impossible via android App.

thank you so much for help,

have a great day

Ninni

PS: i can, and i did, configure 2 single eap225 as access point via android app, it works. so they are good connected via LAN. i cannot create a mesh. i can rule them but it asks me a EAP LAN controller!

  @Goleus Mesh requires a controller. You can use the free software controller on the TP-Link site, or you can purchase an OC200 or OC300 Hardware controller. Keep in mind that if you choose the free software controller, it needs to be running at all times for full functionality, so choose a PC or Laptop that you can leave on.

  @Goleus

If you need Mesh, then you need to enable it on the controller, then the question arises, Mesh functionality is what needed for the controller to run continuously and a hardware controller is more suitable.
Similar to this is fast roaming, which also requires the controller to run continuously.

Also, do you need to enable the cloud?
If you need to be able to monitor the controller remotely when you are away from home or elsewhere, the cloud service also requires the local controller to be constantly running.

Also, do you need to set up portals for your own clients?
Take a look: Do I need to keep controller running when using portal authentication

  @RickJamesBish  Thank you Rick!

Little question: using free software can i simply configure a mesh between the 2  EAP255s ? i d like to create a mesh without rules or guest portals, just for testing its stability with 10 smartphones moving in the area and looking how antennas manage it.

Thank you again

Ninni

  @Virgo ok,

i set up 2 EAP225 with software controller in mesh, i can say it works fine even if software controller (PC) is turn-off.

so i can test it in mesh in these days ;-) obviously i need a controller when i will sell antennas so i can (i think i can) remotely manage wifi without phisically go to my customer's residence.

thank you for support, and sorry for silly questions, this is my first time with Omada. In the past i used Unifi but they re too much expansive now!

  @Goleus Yes you can enable MESH without having to enable or configure rules or guest portals.

I cannot say for sure what all works or does not work without a controller present. There are some features that rely on the controller but may not be apparent in your network or may not be apparent until the MESH drops due to a power failure or device reboot. For example I am not sure if the MESH will reestablish after the APs boot back up after a power failure.
