Background:

This post provides a configuration guide on web filtering with blocking YouTube as an example.

This Article Applies to:

All Omada routers with Web Filtering support

Configuration Steps:

1. Select your Organization and choose your Site.

2. Go to Settings > Network Security > URL Filtering. Choose Gateway Rules and click Create New Rule.

3. Input parameters for this rule. We take YouTube as an example here.

You can copy the following path:

*.youtube.*

youtube.com

m.youtube.com
*.youtube.com
ytimg.com
*.s.ytimg.com
ytimg.I.google.com
*.youtube.l.google.com
*.i.google.com
*.googlevideo.com
*.youtu.be
yt.be

Note: If your controller does not allow more than 10 URL paths, please create an additional rule)

4. Click Create and it should take effect immediately.

Verification:

1. Close your browser and launch Incognito mode(Chrome) or Private mode(Firefox).

2. Access the www.youtube.com and press F12 to launch the dev tools to monitor the Network. Pay attention to the Name and Status.

Note:

1. This guide is based on the FAQ3229 How to configure URL blacklist or whitelist using Omada Controller's URL Filtering feature

2. "." means that this rule will be applied to any website. For example, if you want to allow website A and deny other websites, you can add an Allow rule for website A and add a Deny rule for ".".

Note that the "." rule should have the smallest ID number(place it in the first place), which means the highest priority. Then place the desired Allow rule after it.

The "*" stands for the wildcard. "*.exmaple.com" means all subdomains of the TLD(top-level domain), "example.com", will be blocked.

*.example.* is used to block all the related domains of the example site.

3. In the Verification section, you may face an issue that URL Filtering is not effective right after the configuration. This situation only occurs when your browser has already launched the www.youtube.com a few minutes ago or so. To fix this, you may need to wait for a while before all the sessions established with the YouTube servers are closed.

4. There are several sites that use more than one domain to work. Like the example we illustrated in this guide, simply blocking its TLD in the Web Filtering, its top-level domain, is not going to be effective. In this case, we strongly recommend you search for all related domains on the Internet and add them to the URL path.
