EAP650 intermittent loss of internet access while remaining connected wirelessly
EAP650 intermittent loss of internet access while remaining connected wirelessly

Model: EAP650
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.6

I have an ER605 router connected to a TL-SG2008P switch, also using an OC300 hardware controller. I'm also using two access points, one designated the "Living Room AP" and connected directly to the switch, and a second designated the "Office AP" and connected wirelessly to the first over mesh.

In the last few weeks (with no configuration changes on my end) I've started having connectivity issues where the internet connection for a device will drop out entirely while the device remains connected to the wireless network. The connection usually comes back after a minute or two (but sometimes takes longer). While the internet isn't working, I'm still able to connect wirelessly to the hardware controller and change settings or check logs, but there aren't any logs that seem to appear concurrently with the loss of internet connection. As far as my modem is concerned, it claims to retain its internet connection the entire time and shows as connected when I log in to my service provider to check on that end. The controller software also continues to indicate that the connection from the router to the internet is "online" for the duration of these outages.

It's not clear to me exactly where the problem lies, but the controller logs show two things happening consistently without any input on my end:

1. The Office AP IP/subnet mask will reset to 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0, and then within a few seconds correct back to 10.75.1.5/255.255.255.0 (which is what it's supposed to be). In the logs, it looks like this (most recent entry first):

Office AP was connected.

Sep 15, 2023 07:28:57  pm

The LAN IP address/mask of Office AP were changed to 10.75.1.5/255.255.255.0.

Sep 16, 2023 11:58:57  am

The LAN IP address/mask of Office AP were changed to 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0.

Sep 16, 2023 11:58:53  am

However, this issue dates back as far as my logs go (August 18), and I haven't been noticing connectivity problems as a network user that far back.

2. At seemingly entirely separate times (hours away from the issue above), there are logs that say the Living Room AP was connected to the switch, and then disconnected usually under 10 minutes later. In the logs it looks like this:

Living Room AP was disconnected from network "LAN" on Switch(connected time:6m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 16, 2023 05:08:24  am

Living Room AP is connected to Switch on LAN network.

Sep 16, 2023 05:02:01  am

Living Room AP was disconnected from network "LAN" on Switch(connected time:6m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 16, 2023 01:53:24  am

Living Room AP is connected to Switch on LAN network.

Sep 16, 2023 01:44:56  am

Living Room AP was disconnected from network "LAN" on Switch(connected time:8m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 15, 2023 10:43:24  pm

Living Room AP is connected to Switch on LAN network.

Sep 15, 2023 10:32:02  pm

Living Room AP was disconnected from network "LAN" on Switch(connected time:5m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 15, 2023 07:37:54  pm

Living Room AP is connected to Switch on LAN network.

Sep 15, 2023 07:29:10  pm

The same thing is happening with devices that connect to the WAN:

Galaxy-S23-Ultra was disconnected from network [Redacted] on Switch(connected time:13h15m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 16, 2023 10:02:55  am

Galaxy-S23-Ultra is connected to Switch on [Redacted] network.

Sep 16, 2023 09:57:12  am

iPhone was disconnected from network [Redacted] on Switch(connected time:1h1m connected, traffic: 0Bytes).

Sep 16, 2023 09:21:25  am

iPhone is connected to Switch on [Redacted] network.

Sep 16, 2023 09:15:11  am

However, sometimes the logs will go a long time and show none of these connect/disconnect issues. What's strange to me is that if you look at the logs, the logged events are not the same time apart as the log suggests - for example, it says the Galaxy-S23-Ultra was connected for 13h15m, but the logs show the connection happening 5 minutes before the disconnection.

So far I've made sure all the firmware is updated, rebooted all devices, and "forgot" and re-provisioned both APs. I can't find any mention of similar issues anywhere in the community. Any ideas for what could be happening?

  @MassiveMordy

Hey, the logs show the AP and the switch disconnected frequently, have you checked the physical connection?

Tried using a short cable to connect the EAP to the switch, tried with different ports on the switch.

Did you set VLAN or ACL to block the port, maybe?

@MassiveMordy did you find out what the problem was? I having the same issues. It started after I updated the AP firmware. So far I've change ethernet cables, forgot and reprovision my APs, moved the controller to a docker container (this resolved the issue for 2 days), swapped both AP around.

What is the model number of your APs? What about the new firmware version?

Just to add another data point, I'm seeing this in my logs as well. It hasn't happened since November 4, though I don't know what's changed since then. It's connected via Ethernet back to my switch. None of the others have done this, and they're all connected to the same switch in the same manner (even down to the same cabling/connectors which test good).

  @chrisfromthelc

I've always thought the odds are that the problem has more to do with the local physical connection, maybe it's the cable, maybe it's the port, maybe it's the distance.
