Model: EAP650
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.10

Hi

I have a brand new single EAP650 (EU) on gigabit wired backhaul, configured to Auto channel (reporting channel 48 which is strange as I expected 50) with 160Mhz channel width and custom TX Power of 23 dBm which is the maximum. EAP650 is adopted to software controller running 24/7.

I connected my laptop (with an Intel AX200 wifi card in it) to the EAP650 and it reports 2400/2400 link speed on channel 48 (strange should be 50 imho) at 160Mhz however an iperf test from the laptop to the EAP650 server only gives 400Mbps despite the laptop sitting six inches from the EAP650 on a desk.I performed a wifi survey at the time of testing and the mine was the only 5Ghz wifi showing.

I have seen a few other reports of complaints of poor wifi speed... I'm at wits end after playing with this brand new AP for a few days and about to return all my Omada gear if this cannot be resolved.

Omada controller is set to Australian region.

Signal strength also drops off very rapidly with a little distance, much more than on my previous Asus RT-AC86U. To the point it has me wondering if this EAP650 is defective? I'm approximately -70dBm at 10m distance through a couple of plasterboard walls. Also at times even right next to the router, signal strength is only -40dBm... I thought this is a bit low also.

I should also mention the base of the AP gets quite hot, so hot that it is uncomfortable on the hand. Is this expected?

====UPDATE====

I managed to nearly saturate the 1gbps ethernet backhaul via wifi 5ghz with my laptop by expanding the tcp window in iperf 2 (-w 2m). However the EAP650 processor does not seem fast enough to give proper throughput test when running iperf server on it so instead I ran it on another server hardwired on gigabit ethernet to get this result.

Unfortunately this means I don't have a good way to test if wifi throughput can be achieved faster than 1gbps but given the 1gbps wired backhaul I guess it doesn't matter.

I would like to see TP-Link take this seriously and unlock the TX power and available channels to those legally allowed in Australia

For power limits see attachment which has been derived from Australian Radiocommunications (Low Interference Potential Devices) Class Licence 2015 ammendment to the Radiocommunications Act 1992

Please help, thanks in advance!

  @Zanadar

A few things here...

Your wireless card is only 2x2, you will only get a certain amount of performance out of a 2x2 wireless card.  That's part of your battle there.

Go to the intel support site and confirm that you're on the latest firmware version.  Windows can get behind on firmware updates.  Intel does have a support app that auto checks for you that can be downloaded.

Also, your "2400/2400 link speed" is negotiated air time speed, NOT real time air time speed.

  @KimcheeGUN I will check the firmware version on the AX200 but as you see my mobile phone iperf yielded similar results.

HE160 (160Mhz channel width 802.11ax) theoretical max speed is 1200 Mbps per stream, so 2x streams should be theoretical max 2400 Mbps. That is a looooooong way from 400 Mbps in my iperf tests.

I get what you are saying... but negotiated air time speeds and real time speeds are two different animals are you dealing with.

You take your negotiated air time speeds and cut 50-75% (give or take) of that, and that's your REAL time air time speeds.

Not trying to double post, but I have two 670's in my home.  I get roughly 750 on a good night.  That's real time speed internal speeds.  From 1 laptop to another laptop on the same AP.

  @KimcheeGUN wifi 6 clients are max 2x2 so EAP670 is same speed for single client as EAP650... are you on 160Mhz channel width?

  @Zanadar I'm also in a similar situation to yours, I'm having Wi-Fi speed issues to the point where internet at times is not browsable let alone getting stable YouTube videos to play, the only difference is the model of Access Point and that I use 2.4Ghz instead. I spent days and days trying to fix the issue but was unable to find any sort of solution, looking around online or even this forum revealed that Omada\TP-Link Access Points have pretty often issues with Wi-Fi speeds for some reason, wished that was something I knew earlier. I'm frustrated with this and currently considering switching to another, more reliable brand if the issue is not fixed as this is just ridiculous. Something that might help you is that you can find more information on what I tried in my post here as I went to extensive lenghts to get it fixed but still nothing works  indecisionindecisionindecisionindecisionindecision

  @Zanadar

Did you test it with a short cable? I have to say -70dBm is a very bad signal, and the Iperf test result is not good, it seems like the new EAP650 has some issue maybe.

Have you tested in standalone mode? Better reaching out to tech support for a new brand device ASAP.

Just striving to develop myself while helping others.

  @Virgo The cable is already very short less than 1m. I have not tested in standalone mode, this is not how I expect the device to operate. Regardless, see update... I did manage to nearly saturate 1gbps ethernet backhaul at extremely close range but signal and speed drops off very quickly due to low transmit power. Transmit power should be increase inline with legislation and all channels made available.

  @Zanadar well after discovering the lack of compliance to australian wifi channels and power, I have returned the access points and will be buying a different brands product.

This is probably a story which mirrors others... caveat emptor.
