Model: EAP670
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.2

Hello,

first i am new to the TP-Link world. I am currently using a lot of ubnt hardware and want to explore alternative systems.

There was no EAP683 LR or TL-SG3428XPP-M in the drop down. Sorry about that.

My setup is a TL-SG3428XPP-M2 and two EAP683 LR for testing. The switch has firmware 1.20 and the APs both 1.02. I am using a selfhosted omada remote controller instance.

The test is a simple ping to the access points. I am not talking about any wifi issues (yet).

What i figured out so far:

  1. All APs are working with any cable using a unifi 2.5GBit/s switch (with 2.5GBit/s speed) and POE
  2. POE is always working using the TP-Link switch (with no data connection if there is a direct patched AP connected with link speed auto)
  3. 2.5 GBit/s is always working - but only without POE
  4. 2.5 GBit/s link speed with POE is working having a fixed installed, grounded cable together with two patch cables using the TP-Link switch
  5. 2.5 GBit/s link speed with POE is working using a unshielded ISDN cable (no ground) using the TP-Link switch
  6. 1 GBit/s fixed link speed is working with around 30% packet loss using the TP-Link switch with a direct connected patch cable
  7. 100 MBit/s fixed link speed is working without any packet loss using the TP-Link switch with a direct connected patch cable

That took me some hours and it seems if there is a problem with ground. Is there a known bug or do i have a faulty switch? All devices have been delivered in the last week.

Best

Martin

What about forcing the switch port link speed to 1G for testing?

I'm not sure it is the same issue but a beta firmware with a solution here you can take a look.

  @Virgo

Hello Viro,

thank you for your reply. With 1GBit/s fixed link speed i have around 30% packet loss that was my sixth test. I need to switch to 100MBit/s to make it work.

Best regards

Martin

It's probably on the modem end...not liking the force port rate.  If you force the UniFi switch to 1G+POE do you still see similar packet loss?

If not, then it's some kind of firmware bug in the TPLink switch where the internal switch fabric thinks it's 2.5G capable, but it isn't.

The fixed link speed was just for 1 GBit/s and 100 MBit/s.

I will create a ticket. Thank you for your replies.

Maybe my writing was too much. Short version of my problem:

I can't get a stable connection when I connect the APs (two EAP683) directly via patch cable. I have more or less 100% packet loss.

The APs work fine on a unifi switch. I have to set the port speed to 100MBit/s on the switch to avoid packet loss. If I don't connect the APs directly but have two network sockets in between or use a cable without ground (ISDN), the APs work with 2.5 GBit/s without any problems.

Do you have any VLAN settings? Like setting a VLAN ID or anything else.

  @Virgo

Nope - i did not configure any vlans yet.

I am having packet loss to the AP from e.g. my router using a simple ping. Using the AP for wifi is not possible when it is directly connected with 2.5 GBit/s since the clients do not get a dhcp configuration. Moving the AP to another 2.5GBit/s switch everything is fine.

  @Virgo

I created a ticket and just uploaded a video where i try to show the problem. Lets see what the support says. I'm pretty sure that the POE is interfering with the Ethernet connection via the shielding. As soon as POE is off, there is no problem.
