We are experiencing an issue with our VPN router ER8411, where some of our authorized clients receive a notification on their mobile devices that reads "IP obtaining - no IP allocation." As a result, the clients are disconnected from the internet.

The only solution we have found so far is to restart the VPN router, and things work fine for the time being.

We had a similar problem with our previous TL-ER7206 router and were advised by a TP-link engineer to upgrade to ER8411. After upgrading, the issue was resolved, and in the past 7 months, we had no issues, but we have been facing the same problem since last week with ER8411.

If we want to continue using the Omada platform every 6 months, we must go through old hardware (router), migrate to new hardware.

Looking for a solution and advice.

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

1. You probably should continue the conversation with the previous support engineer you talked with.

2. He recommended you upgrade it to 8411, I guess you have many clients? Then how many clients do you have?

3. "Authorized clients", so are you referring to these as wireless clients? Are they connected to the WIFI?

So, have you ruled out the WIFI issue? Distance or weak sign which the AP rejects the connection and eventually led to the problem you see now?

4. "Authorized clients", so, is there a commonality between them? Same system like all Android? Any details?

Currently, the maximum number of clients connected to the network is 345 and all clients are connected through WIFI.

Regarding distance or weak signal, we do not have a set RSSI threshold as it is currently disabled.

We have not noticed any commonalities between the clients, but we will keep an eye on it.

The default DHCP pool will only provide 253 IP addresses. Whilst I guess you don't have all 345 clients connected at any one time, if the lease time for a previously disconnected client has not yet expired, its allocated address will not be available for re-use.

So , in a nutshell, it looks like you are running out of available IP addresses in the DHCP pool.

Restarting the router will, of course, clear out any previous leases, thus allowing the addresses to be re-used.

You MIGHT be able to improve things by reducing the DHCP lease time, such that unused addresses are available more quickly.
