ER8411 Firmware 1.2.3 - Unstable WAN 10Gb SFP+ Behavior and PPPoE Issues
Hello,
I’m experiencing issues with my ER8411 router running firmware 1.2.3 Build 20241121 Rel.21021 when using a 10Gb WAN connection. I’ve tested two different setups and encountered the following:
Case 1: Using ISP router (DIGI, Spain) with DMZ to ER8411
-
The fiber from the ISP goes to their router, and I forward the connection via DMZ to the ER8411.
-
Everything seems to work fine, but I frequently experience random drops and micro disconnections.
-
While the internet is usable most of the time, these intermittent disconnections are disruptive.
-
I also noticed CPU spikes up to 100% during these drops, which seems abnormal.
Case 2: Direct XGSPON SFP+ stick into ER8411 (bypassing ISP router)
-
When using an XGSPON SFP+ stick to connect directly to the fiber, the problems worsen:
-
The router often shows SFP+1 WAN Down or that the module is disconnected.
-
I get PADI/PADR authentication errors, and sometimes PPPoE says the username/password are incorrect, even though they are correct.
-
PPPoE XXXXXX@digi failed to connect to the server because sending PADR times out.
-
PPPoE XXXXXX@digi failed to connect to the server because sending PADI times out.
-
-
Occasionally, it authenticates successfully and even gets a WAN IP, but internet is still unreachable.
-
I have managed to run a single speed test during one of the rare working moments, and speeds were fine.
-
-
During these events, the router’s CPU usage spikes to 100%, and as soon as that happens, the SFP+1 WAN port drops.
-
When the router is under this state, it also becomes completely unreachable via other working WAN ports.
-
I have a working 1Gb fiber PPPoE line on WAN4, which also stops working whenever SFP+1 fails.
Additional Notes
-
I suspected my SFP+ module might be faulty, but I tested it on two other routers and a pfSense box, and it works perfectly.
-
Other users I know are using different brand XGSPON modules with 10Gb successfully on the ER8411, so this doesn’t seem to be a general hardware incompatibility.
-
I’ve also noticed that even with “Online Detection” turned off, the interface status still shows as “Online”, and I can’t change it.
Conclusion
This strongly appears to be a firmware issue on the ER8411. I’ve seen other threads reporting PPPoE and SFP+ problems on Omada routers, so I hope TP-Link can investigate this and provide a fix or workaround.
Please let me know if more logs or tests are needed. I really need a stable 10Gb WAN setup and would appreciate help from TP-Link support or other users who solved similar issues.
Thanks in advance.
