Omada Router v Virgin Hub

Omada Router v Virgin Hub

I currently have a Virgin Hub in Modem Mode connected to a Google/Nest Wi-Fi setup.

I am looking at upgrading to an Omada setup and I'm currently testing out an EAP 723 access point to see how good the signal is.

At some point I will need to swap out the Nest WiFi access point that is working as the router, the no cost option would be to disable the modem mode on the Virgin and allow that to act as the router for the entire network. The alternative option is to keep modem mode enabled and then buy an Omada router, this can then be managed centrally and I can provide much more granular control over the network (I'm particularly interested in QoS for Teams calls and I believe this would require an Omada router).

The added benefit is that I could buy the ER7212, this would allow me to move to a hardware controller and I can sell the 4 port PoE switch I'm currently using.

I guess the main question is will I see much benefit? Does it make more sense to expand the Omada access points first and then worry about an Omada router further down the line.

Hi  @Philip81

Thanks for posting here. Whether you should prioritize the router upgrade or expand your Omada APs first depends on your needs.

Here's a breakdown to help you decide:

Benefits of an Omada Router Now
Granular QoS for Teams Calls:
The Omada router will allow you to prioritize Teams traffic, reducing latency/jitter during calls.

Centralized Management:
You can manage both routing and Wi-Fi from one interface.
Better Security & VLAN Support:
If you plan to segment devices (IoT, guest networks), an Omada router makes this easier.

Better Wi-Fi Coverage First:
If your current Nest Wi-Fi has dead zones, adding more EAP723 APs will improve coverage before optimizing routing.
Lower Upfront Cost:
You can delay the router purchase if Teams QoS isn't a critical issue yet.

Test Omada’s Ecosystem:
If you're still evaluating Omada, expanding APs first lets you test Wi-Fi performance before committing to the router.

EAP723

  • 1× 2.5GbE port unlocks the full potential of Wi-Fi 7.

EAP7212PC is limited to 1 G. I recommend ER7412-M2.  However, it lacks POE-out and doesn't come with a built-in Omada controller.
