New switch getting a LOT of errors

Model: TL-SG1016PE
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 1.0.0 Build 20240417 Rel.53354

I purchased a TPLink TL-SG1016PE switch new and used it to replace an unmanaged switch. Straight away it starts to show a LOT of errors, about 3x more errors than packets. It would only come up as 100M half duplex. It's a long run of about 70m so I thought maybe the cable is no good or runs too close to power. The previous switch was unmanaged so maybe it was getting a ton of errors and I didn't know. But then I pulled out a really old 100M managed netgear switch (FS726T) that has 2 x 1G ports and swapped it with the netgear. It came up as 1000M full with zero errors after a week of running. So I thought maybe I'll try the switch closer, so put it in a shed 12 feet from my house, powered from the house. It comes up as 1000M full but I'm still getting errors. It is a lot less errors now but still errors. It's maybe a 10m run. I have tried different ports on the GS728TP and the TL-SG1016PE with no change. Are TPLinks simply better at reporting errors or is there an issue?

Errors:

TL-SG1016PE    <---------------------->    Netgear GS728TP

Fine:

FS726T    <----------------------> Netgear GS728TP

EDIT: Something odd I just noticed is the errors are the same for 2 ports. Traffic from my PC on port 9 and going to the GS728TP on port 16. I'm trying to think of a situation where the receive errors would be the same for 2 ports but 0 transmit errors. I can't really think of a reason for that beyond a software bug.

It is a known issue that Easy Smart switches show packet errors on trunk ports when VLANs are used.  If I remember correctly, the errors are not really errors but rather an internal issue with the way that the chipset interprets the packets.  You will have to do a Google search for more info as I no longer have any links.

  @jra11500 Thanks for the reply. Wow, that's nuts, the thread was from 2015 and I specifically paid extra to make sure I got the most recent version of the switch. It's hard to comprehend they are still putting out switches that do this. I've sent a message to the supplier that I want to return it. See how I go. Maybe this issue on it's own would be ok but it's also coming up as 100M half duplex and the software for my cameras keeps dropping out and I have to push play again on the cameras. I'm going to buy another second hand Netgear. They have always been rock solid for me.

  @MikeKulls

Thank you for your post. We’d like to confirm whether, with a 70 m cable, the switch can negotiate 1000 Mbps full-duplex when connected to the FS726T.
Regarding the packet loss you mentioned—roughly three times the number of data packets—could you clarify what exactly you’re referring to? We haven’t received similar reports before, so we’re inclined to suspect cable quality or other external factors.Additionally, please let us know if any special configuration has been applied on your switch.

Hi  @Ethan-TP, thanks for the reply. I was only able to get 100M half duplex over the 70M cable going to a Netgear GS728TP at the other end. When I switched out the TPLink for an FS726T I would get 1G full duplex with no errors. (see basic diagram below). Regarding packet loss, I'm not sure I was getting packet loss, just getting a large number of RxBadPkt errors. There is a large thread about it here https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/83046?sortDir=ASC&page=4. I moved the TPLink switch to a location close to the GS728TP and I was still getting RxBadPkt errors and my security camera viewing software would keep dropping out and requiring me to hit play again. According to the thread the RxBadPkt errors might not be real errors, although that combined with it not running at 1G and other issues I decided to return it.
