AX23 - Router stops working each day after firmware update
Hello,
after recent firmware update of my AX23, problems started to occur. The router gets unresponsive usually after 1-2 days - the connectivity from the clients is lost and it is not possible to reach the administration ui or anything. It's like it is stuck. There is no red or orange LED indicator, all the lights look ok. The only possible way to make it work again is a a manual restart (yes, I've done it many times).
I have even done the hard reset - so the setup from the scratch and the problem still occurs.
Is this a known issue? I am really disappointed, tried already everything. There is a statement in the release notes "This firmware cannot be degraded to the previous version.". So I am wondering how can I resolve this problem.
Thank you.

Hi @spacehunter ,
Thanks for contacting our community.
Besides updating the firmware, did you modify any other settings?
When the internet drops, have you checked the modem? Does it work at this time?
Please change the two DNS Servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. How to Change the DNS servers on the wireless router and DSL modem router (New UI)?

No settings were changed after nor before the firmware update. When the problem occurs, I can't access the router at all. Internet connection drops in my NAS and I only get an email it's unreachable. There is no way to observe what exactly happened in the router by checking logs, etc. Even if some device still has the wifi connection, there's no internet and I can't access router's web management console.
It's not a problem of ISP, because a TV service that is connected differently, not via this router is still working normally.
I've changed the DNS configuration as you suggested, but I'm not convinced it will resolve the problem.
Thank you.

Hi @spacehunter ,
Please also change the channel and channel width for the router: You may refer to Changing Channel and Channel Width on a TP-Link Router (new logo).
For 2.4GHz wireless client devices, adjust the 2.4GHz channel width to 20MHz; channels 1, 6 and 11 are generally best, but any channel can be used.
For 5 GHz wireless client devices, adjust the 5GHz channel width to 80MHz or 40MHz, etc. For 5GHz's channel, we recommend you use channel in Band 4, which is channel 149-165, if your router supports it.

I can now confirm, that changing the DNS settings from previous suggestion didn't help. Today another failure, router totally inoperable.
From your recent reply regarding the Wi-Fi settings, only 2 GHz channel width changed to 20 Mhz is applicable.
Anyways can changing these physical WiFi settings really have affect on the router performance? I mean I do not have problem with wireless. It's a failure of router on a global level what is happening here.
Thank you.

Do you have the US or EU version? Have you updated to the latest firmware?
What is interesting when seeing the US and EU support sites, the US latest version is:
Archer AX23(US)_V1.2_1.1.3 Build 20250904
But latest EU firmware is still a little behind:
Archer AX23(EU)_V1.20_1.1.1 Build 20240822
I can imagine there are some HW, compliance, norm differences, etc., but I'm just wondering...
Thanks.

That's the same firmware. Thank you!
Do you use also the VPN Server feature there? As a cause I am suspecting some changes in features / areas that were updated in this new firmware. Besides Easymesh optimization they've implemented a VPN Client funtionality. Currently I have disabled both Easymesh and the VPN Server, but I already do have a certificate generated. In the old firmware the certificate wasn't persisted - so after reboot you've lost them and needed to regenerate. Now it is kept even after power off - and that's another noticeable change.
Somehow I am suspecting that it might cause maybe out of memory (???) after some time. There is just no way to observe the behaviour during the breakdown, because I can't extract the system logs for further analysis. I can only guess and try disabling things...so far not successful.

@spacehunter Hi, i have openvpn server enabled on both ax23's and always connected clients to them with 10+ ip cameras. i also have c64 routers (smrtconnect problems and 2.4 ghz tx power loss after some time)and want to say that ax23 work more stable 24/7 on all firmware version for almost two years.
