We have 2 ssid's setup. One for private (vlan1) and one for guests (vlan100). The controller is setup on an ip of 192.168.1.50 on vlan1.

The problem with this setup is when a portal is enabled on the guest wifi they cannot access the controller for authentification. Is this setup correct? My understanding is we want them on different vlans to split the traffic.

How through the controller or network can i allow the guest network to access the controller for authorisation without reducing the security of the network.

Thanks

In short: you need to make the controller accessible from both VLANs.

Thanks R1D2, this is what i was thinking but is this possible using a TL-R480T+ V9, We don't have any other switches on this simple network.

Not sure, I don't have experience with those routers. Probably someone in the Load-Balanced Routers subforum could answer this.
