Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.0.1 Build 20151218 Rel.58739

Hi,

I have a home setup using multiple switches as follows:

Router(pfsense) - TL-SG105E - Unifi 8PoE - TL-SG1016DE

On the router I currently have the default subnet 192.168.178.0/24 for all devices.

I would like to start separating devices by function, like IoT, Guest, Wifi, Camera etc.

I created a separate VLAN40 on the router with 192.168.40.0/24.

I would like to configure this VLAN on 1 or 2 ports to start with so I can learn and understand the concept.

If I want a port on the 1st switch on VLAN40, how do I configure it so the other 2 switches will continue to receive everything?

And if I want a port on the last switch (the 16DE), do I have to configure the 5-port switch first? If yes, how?

What is a good example and explanation on setting up VLANs on these switches, as this is still not very clear to me?

Thanks in advance.

Jaap

Hello Japio342,

to link the first with a second and a third switch use a trunk port. Connect TL-SG105E port #5 with port #1 of the UniFi switch. Assign both ports a tagged membership of both VLANs 1 and 2. When using tagged frames only on a trunk port, the port's PVID doesn't matter. Do the same for the TL-SG1016DE.

Hi R1D2, thanks for the quick reply. I know the concept of using VLANs, only thing I didn't understand was how TP-Link is using it. Due to inhouse wiring, I can only use one LAN port on the pfsense which will carry all VLANs. Is it possible to configure the 1st switch without interrupting traffic to the second and 3rd? I guess I first need to check if the pfsense outputs as trunk after adding a VLAN before I can configure the 1st switch. Thanks so far. Jaap

@Japio342, to be honest, I do not understand your questions.

What do you mean with »how TP-Link is using [VLANs]«?

There is only one way to use 802.1Q VLANs: it's the way the 802.1Q standard defines and which every switch manufacturer needs to follow in order to have their switches classified as 802.1Q-compatible. The standard defines mechanisms only and the one who determines how a VLAN mechanism is to be used is the network admin.

Configuring a switch does not disrupt its services except if you change ports used for this service or if you reboot the switch.

Dear @Japio342,

Please ensure the connected ports among the pfsense router and 3 switches are set as turnk ports in corresponding VLANs. On TP-Link switches, select the port as Tagged port to achieve VLAN Trunk feature. For your reference, please check the configuration example of VLAN on TP-Link switches (the router doesn't support trunk VLAN in the configuration example).

Hope the information is helpful.
