Model: ER7212PC
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: V1_1.0.4_Build 20230724

I have downloaded the beta firmware and flashed into my ER7212PC.

The reason is that I needed the port mirroring functionality released in this firmware.

However I am confused that I am only allowed to assign POE capable ports to be mirrored to the WAN/LAN ports.
All other network ports on the device is greyed out from being selected to be mirrored.

Can I check if this is a known issue/limitation with the beta firmware?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi @s25pacct

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

1. Would be helpful if you have pictures to illustrate your issue.

2. ER7212PC has released its public build. I would suggest you upgrade to the public release as ER7212PC V1.0.4 beta is outdated.

3. You can only mirror from one port to another port that is not being used in the port mirroring function. 1 to 1. No overlap.

@Clive_A Thank you for the info. I will post the screenshot when I managed to get back to office.

As for the official firmware, none exists in the region I am in right now (i.e. Singapore).
Using the update interface on the device also returns no new firmware (in fact it gives some error)

Will the firmware downloaded from other TPLink website for different regions work for me?

Refer to attached screenshot and link.

Thank you.

Hi @s25pacct

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

Try the official global site: https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/er7212pc/#Firmware

If we are talking about the firmware of the wired devices, wireless is not considered, then you can use the firmware from the global site because they are on the (UN) version. If it's wireless, you have to bid to the local regulations and laws and use the local firmware.

  @Clive_A
Thank you for the information. I finally was able to get to my test set up in the office yesterday and collected some screenshots of the port mirroring menu options I have.

Please see attached images below.

It seems like there is some sort of grouping of ports taking place (e.g. Ports 2,4,9,10,11,12 in one group, Ports 1,3,5,6,7,8 in another group).

I have verified that no other ports are doing mirroring on my set up.

However if there is a configuration somewhere that I missed, please let me know.

I am using the latest firmware V1_1.1.0 Build 20230803. The behavior I have seen is same as the Beta version I was using earlier.

My original intention was hoping I can mirror ingress/egress traffic from ports 5 to 10 to WLAN/LAN4 (i.e. port4).

Can you confirm if this is a known limitation or is it a misconfiguration on my end?
Any help you can provide to give more clarity on this particular issue I am having is appreciated.

On a side note, out of curiosity the model number with "(UN)", what does the UN represent? Universal?
I can't seem to find the definition anywhere hence was originally confused when my model is non "(UN)" and the Beta firmware was the only one with port mirroring.
Ended up I just risked it and flashed the new firmware.  :-)

How do you test and conclude that no other ports are being mirrored?

You can think UN = universal. UN is only applied to non-wireless related devices as they don't relate to wireless regulations. All non-wireless products we have are marked as (UN) on the sticker. ER7212PC does not have wireless and it is UN. Definitely. I don't see how you draw this conclusion.

@Clive_A Thank you again for your patience and support.

Re: How do I verify if the other ports are not doing port mirroring?

I did this by going into the settings of each of the ports and ensuring
(a) the mirroring checkbox is not selected AND
(b) selecting the mirroring checkbox (But not clicking "Apply") to check the if any ports are showing up as being mirror to the selected port

To confirm again in (b) I just select the check box to ensure the ports listing appears, I am not applying the enable mirroring feature settings.

I have another one of the device (We bought two for testing), I will try configuring it to see if same behavior exists.

As a side note, the set up is only accesible by myself hence highly unlikely someone else changed the configuration without my knowledge.

Thank you again for your support and patience.

This conclusion was drawn from
   (a) TP-Link's Own product labeling on the device (Does not exists on both the devices I have as you indicated)

   (b) Model shown in TP-Link's management interface

*EDIT*
Just to add ON, if ports are mirrored elsewhere, the "eye" icon should show up on other ports and from there I can also confirm/check which ports are mirrored to that port.
So far no other ports other than the one I configured has the "eye" icon.

I've also tried on a second unit of ER7212PC, same results with the same updated ER7212PC(UN)_V1_1.1.0 Build 20230803  firmware.
I've went a step further and do a factory reset after updating the firmware version and configure it via the wizard again with same exact results. The mirrored ports are only configurable toa specific group of ports, anything outside the group is not "mirror-able".

TBH, I am quite confused by your words. I don't see the methodology you've used for the test.

I would expect to see that you have tried Wireshark and used it for analysis. So, did you use any tools like Wireshark to mirror the port?

I start to think that you've misunderstood the meaning of port mirroring. Port mirroring is mirroring the traffic from one port to another one for analysis, it's not copying the configs.

How to capture packets using Wireshark on SMB router or switch

@Clive_A Thank you again for the quick response. My answer to your queries

Re: TBH, I am quite confused by your words. I don't see the methodology you've used for the test.

The steps I took

1. Configure the ER71212PC for port mirroring (Ports 5 to 12 to WLAN/LAN4)

Note: This is what the ticket is all about. Ports 5,6,7,8 are not to be allowed to be mirrored to WLAN/LAN4 in the software.

2. Run some traffic on devices connected to the ports and monitor it on wireshark from a PC connected to WLAN/LAN4.

3. Able to monitor traffic of devices connected to ports 9, 10, 11,12. Nothing for devices connected to ports 5,6,7,8.

Re: I would expect to see that you have tried Wireshark and used it for analysis. So, did you use any tools like Wireshark to mirror the port?

Yes wireshark is used. However wireshark is only useful if the router/switch is configured to mirror ALL  the required ports (i.e.Ports 5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12) to the destination port (i.e. WAN/LAN4).

Right now the router software is not even allowing the configuration to happen for ports 5,6,7and 8 to WAN/LAN4.

The router software only allows certain ports to be mirrored to a port in its' group.

Please refer to the screenshots I provided earlier of the port mirroring option. I attached them again below.

As you can see the software is not allowing ports 5,6,7,8 to be mirrored to WLAN/LAN4. <-- This is exactly the issue I am trying to clarify.

Re: I start to think that you've misunderstood the meaning of port mirroring. Port mirroring is mirroring the traffic from one port to another one for analysis, it's not copying the configs.

Actually I am not. I understood the purpose and meaning of port mirroring.

It is to mirror traffic from one port to another for analysis and monitoring.

I am not trying to copy the configuration from one port to another.

Maybe the way the my info is written is causing some confusion on your end. For that I apologize.

Hi @s25pacct

If a port has been mirrored already, it cannot be mirrored again until you unselect it from the existing mirroring group.

A free port, not being mirrored, can be used for a new mirroring. It cannot be used twice. One at a time.

@Clive_A Thank for the quick reply.

Re:If a port has been mirrored already, it cannot be mirrored again
I understand this part and I have confirmed ports 5,6,7,8 was not mirrored (in earlier reply to your question that maybe they already mirrored and how I confirmed).
I basically double checked by going into every single ports in the configuration menu to double confirmed this as indicated in earlier replies.

Furthermore if ports are being mirrored elsewhere, the status information in the management console would've showed multiple "eye" icons for different monitoring ports.
