Model: ER8411
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.1

Hello,

I have acquired an ER8411 router for my company's network and I have created an openvpn tunnel on one of our WAN ports (there are two available, the problem - which will be detailed below - occurs on both of them).

The ER8411 replaces an older Cisco router which was nothing but problems (from slow vpn connections through to things disconnecting at random), and I must say I love the way the ER works on our local network so far.

The issue is that we have four VM's on the local server, and I should be able to access all of them, one of them is the DNS, the other one is the backup DNS, the third one is a VM created for a service which runs fine, and the fourth one (besides being on subnet 1) runs our ERP.

The issue lies with the vpn connection and the fact that I can see all IP's, I can ping all IP's, but I can only connect to the .1.136 VM for a few minutes at a time if I'm lucky, even if I can still ping it.

I get it that openvpn does not tunnel the DNS records on to my connection, but the fact that I can still ping that troublesome VM, but I'm neither able to connect nor access the shares in explorer is simply puzzling.

Everything is working fine on the LAN, the problem lies with openVPN or how it's configured.

My openVPN config is as follows:

Please help, this is the fifth day of busting my brains over this and I'm kind of running on fumes!

I have the same router as you, I've had some problems with OpenVPN so I don't use it anymore, but what you can try is to use TCP instead of UDP, my problems have mostly been UDP related.

it is worth a try.

@MR.S It appears to be hanging on to the connection more than it ever did.

I would like to hear what solution you resorted to, as OpenVPN was my last resort since we already tried wireguard and most of the tunnels we created took down my entire network.

I configured an OpenVPN server here to test, it works here for me, far from the specifications on speed but no drop

this is my configuration, I tested with splitt and full and I dont use standard port. and IP pool is not the same as LAN network, use a unique ip on IP pool

  @MR.S

What openvpn touted is indeed far from what's happening. Following your advice I managed to get on the vpn and no dropouts occurred, with doing all the tests I can think of. I'll test it over the weekend and I'll begin rolling it out to my users next week, and I'm positive they'll find out that obscure edge-case that IT did not think to test against. I'll let you know.

Thanks again
