EAP653(EU) v1.0 / 1.1.0 (3x)

I have house in which I have an EAP 653 access point on each of the floors (ground/1st/2nd) with a wired connection to a switch. Generally speaking the connection is good throughout the house(close to AP's I am able to achieve 600MBps+). Also devices seem to connect to the expected AP, also when moving through the house. The number of devices connected wireless is limited (<10) and are divided over the AP's .

However, it frequently happens that, even though I have a good connection to the AP (all bars), there is no internet for a short period (30s+) on a wireless device like my laptop or iPhone. During that same period wired devices like the TV and audio streamer seem keep working. This seems to be a common issue as I have found numerous posts on Reddit and the TP-Link forum that showcase similar behaviour, but no clear resolution.

I have already tried the following things to resolve this, but have not found a full solution yet:

  • Decrease Tx power of all AP's 5Ghz to Low and 2.4Ghz to the minimum (via custom)(led to improvement)
  • Force WPA2-AES and disable PMF
  • Enable minimum data rate control and disable CCK rates
  • Disable ARP-to-Unicast
  • Disabled band steering
  • Set DTIM period to 3 (although I am not sure this is supported by my AP's)
  • Run WLAN optimization (multiple times). The disadvantage is that optimization keeps pushing the Tx power near to the maximum
  • Mesh is disabled
  • Fast roaming AI roaming have been both enabled/disabled, but no apparent changes. Currently both are enabled.

I am at my wit's end and don't know what to do further. I thought I had a very simple set-up that I would expect to work out of the box, but I have been testing and trying stuff for two weeks already without a stable wireless connection. Has someone been able to resolve these issues or can point me in the right direction?

Hi  @Siddler

You may consider the following:

  1. How often will the issue happen?
  2. When the issue happens, will all the connected wireless clients lose internet for 30 seconds at the same time? Or some are having the issue, the others are still working?
  3. Is this issue only happening on certain clients? Or all clients having this issue?
  4. What's the firmware version of the EAP? Please make sure they are working under the latest version.
  5. Are all the EAP units having this issue? Or only certain EAP units?
  6. Check the network cable connecting the access point and the switch to ensure that the cable is not damaged, loose or of poor quality. Try replacing the network cable with a new one.
Wish you a happy life and smooth network usage!

  @Siddler

This is exactly what I encounter!  It happens a few times per day. I have two EAP653 access points, using a software controller and an ER7206 router. My Chromecast 4K does not have this issue and keeps on streaming during an "outage". The same applies for my HP laptop. When it happens, it lasts for, indeed, about half a minute. At the same time, my wifes phone (a Pocophone M3) and my phone (Poco phone X6 Pro) is not having an internet connection during the 30 seconds. The error recovers itself, but still, it's annoying to have 30 seconds "waiting time" a few times a day.

During an outage, I can reach internal devices, but no Internet services. Looks like the routing is temporary messed up. I tried different DNS settings, but this didn't do the trick. I can't see anything weird on the controller: no high wifi channel usage or reprovisioning of an access point for example.

Hope it can be solved....

  @Vincent-TP

1. The issue happens rather often. I've been home now for 2 hours and had multiple occassion on which I lost 'internet'

2. Not necessarily: my laptop seems more resistant and usually does not drop. My phone and girlfriend phone are often 'out' at the same time or shortly after each other

3. I mostly observe it on our iPhones (iPhone 13 mini, iOs 18.2 and 18.1). I've also observed it on my laptop, but that seems significantly less frequent (although this may be due to different browsing behaviour on laptop vs scrolling on Instagram/Reddit on phones). It also seems that the issue becomes more frequent and persistent the longer I am connected

4. EAP's have latest firmware (1.1.0)

5. I haven't used the ground level AP that much yet, but I do observe it at both the 1st and 2nd floor AP.

6. The AP on the ground level and 2nd floor only have one ethernet drop, so it is not easy to replace. The 1st floor AP has been connected through 3 different outlets and all gave the same issue. I can still swap the cable from the outlet to this AP, but given that I have this issue at multiple outlets and AP's I doubt a faulty cable is the origin of all issues.

Today I also tried setting the DNS servers to the Cloudfare servers instead of the default server, but this did not result into an improvement

As an addition to my previous post:

I have firmware 1.1.0, the latest installed.

I did have swapped the cables ( I am using cat6a sftp), but no improvement

During the outage, no handover to the other AP is taking place.

It happens both when I am very close to an AP (1 meter), but also happens when I am further away and having less connection quality.

Similar issues can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TPLink_Omada/comments/1bnisuf/random_internet_access_losses/

Running standalone mode is no option for me. It seems to be a controller related issue Reddit suggests...

2. your community nickname;

3. The configuration file of controller (Global View>Maintenance>Backup >export);
4. The running log of the controller (Global View>Maintenance>export running logs);
Please export the running log after the issue occurs since we need to analyze the logs generated during the timerange.
