Dear experts,

I will soon buy a device to extend my wifi network. Since I will move out fairly soon and I am not sure what the network configuration in my future appartment(s) will be, I would like to buy a highly versatile device.

I looked at TL-WPA8630, which looks very good. If I understood correctly, with this I can:

1 - setup a power line in my appartment and create a new wifi network from it

-> no question here

2- setup a power line in my appartment and use the device as a repeater of my existing wifi network

-> The advantage here I guess is that the device benefits from the power line. However, how well the device must be receiving the existing wifi network for this functionality to work?

3- may I use TL-WPA8630 as a simple wifi access point connected to my modem via RJ45 (i.e. without passing by the power line, in order to avoid speed limitations)?

Looking forward to hearing from you
Best wishes
Matthias

(2) You wouldn't set it up as a repeater, you'd run it as a 2nd access point. Use the same SSID and passphrase as on the main router, set the two up to use different radio channels, and that's it.
(3) I don't think the 8630 has all the capabilities for a router - it would have to have dedicated WAN mode for one of its RJ45 ports, it needs to act as DHCP server, and many other things it probably doesn't have.

It doesn't route - it's basically an Ethernet switch. So I think that should work. I would expect it would send DHCP broadcasts everywhere and should get an IP via the local Ethernet to the router? I don't see that it would have to cross a Powerline connection to work.

The question was, what if I don't use a router and connect the 8630 directly to the modem.

Most cable / ADSL modems also route and will issue DHCP addresses by default. It's been a long time since I have seen one that doesn't. But yes if its a pure modem device that just passes on 1 IP address from the ISP then it wouldn't work.

Sorry for being unclear, my modem indeed has also a router function that I can turn on such that 8630 is only used as a hotspot, but powered by RJ45 and not power line. Then I guess my answer to question 3 is yes ? :)

Sorry for the confusion, indeed my modem integrates a router and the latter is on.

Then I guess the answer to (3) is yes, i.e. 8630 can work as a 2nd wifi access point and receive network only from ethernet from my modem/routeur (i.e. no power line involved)?

Thanks for your help
Best wishes

That would be a normal use case, yes. Any PLC adapter can be used directly on the router, even those with an integrated WLAN access point.
