100Mbps and 500Mbps

Firmware Version :
ISP : Vodacom
Hi all
I have a question that might sound stupid. When comparing the TL-PA511KIT with the TL-PA411KIT, which both claims to be 500Mbps, the difference I spot between the units is the Interface. The 411 claims 10/100Mbps Ethernet Port and the 511 Gigabit Ethernet Port So how can the 411 then be a 500Mbps unit if the rate is throttled to 100Mbps through the copper interface/RJ45 port?
Am I missing something here?
Regards
Martin

500Mbps refers to high-speed data transfer rates between PLC kit, while 10/100Mbps or Gigabit means data transfer rate between ethernet ports on your PLC device and your router/PC.

That is how I understand it too. So, although the two PLC units can communicate at 500Mbps with eachother, you can not get 2 devices connected to two of them on either side to communicate at more than 100Mbps. Am I right? Seems like a waste to go at 500Mbps then.

In my understanding if the plc units can communicate with 500Mbps with each other, then it can make sure that you can get 100Mbps for the computer. I also heard that if you have several PLCs in a house,
then all the PLC share the speed. 500Mbps PLCs will guarantee the communication speed for themselves and share the speed for more clients connected to PLC. Maybe it is designed to do so.

I agree with you Cora and also understands it like that. The problem that I have is that anyone that does not know much about networks would think they can get 500Mbps between 2 devices connected to 2 PLCs, but in fact the ports will create bottlenecks in the network and the max rate would only be 100Mbps. It is a pitty though as the 411 kit is well priced if you don't read the spec properly.:D

This link may help you checking out some factors which might affect the powerline rate:

I am also at your side, lord Farquar. It is not a easy job to make people who does not know much about the network to know this special spec.TL-PA411kit is really a good units compared with other PLC in prince and speed. Once people get understand its special spec, they will understand its purpose.

The link below may help you, it seems TL-PA411 is more worth to purchase than TL-PA511.
